My boat is in the repair yard and my dad and I will be down for a week. We have been hearing stories of big bass in Oviachic Lake. Are the stories true?
We were thinking of heading down there for a day. Does anybody have any experience there? Can you tell me where to go? Where to get a boat, a guide or any other important info.
Is it in the free trade zone or will I need to get a vehicle permit?

You bet the stories are true! But I haven't a clue on who to contact.
Lots of my friends and family have gone there, and also to other reservoir lakes in Sonora and Sinaloa. Some drive and haul their boats. Others have private planes and fly into their cabins on specific lakes.
You will not regret the trip. It is all that you were told and more.

I just brought my bass boat back last night. Unfortunately I'm going back for eye surgery in a few days and will probably need to keep out of the light for a week or two. Let me know the days and maybe my friend will take you. I'm no expert, but I managed around fifty a day the three days I went out last year. At times they were averaging 2-3.5# with the biggest at 5#. Hopefully now I can get farther up the lake where I believe it may be even better. Let me know if you want any tips. I didn't run across any guides, though there may be some. Not sure if I'll ever be legal to charter the lake but I'll go holo holo (s.p.). You may have a better chance at finding a guide at Novillo - three hours away. Either one is worth the trip.

| Yes, you need the permit (though I ran it, lacking the right paperwork, a few times last year).

I haven't fished there since 2004 - fished the November tournament. The first three places were won by Mexican nationals, all trolling big billed, fat bodied baits - like a Bagleys. Big fish was 6 1/2# and they went down in ounces through the top five fish. We had a winner on the first morning on a 10" black worm fished shallow, but he busted off after jumping over a brush pile. Got lots of fish on Texas rigged 4" worms fished in the brush, but bigger fish when we "did like the Romans" and trolled.
Neat lake, but unless it has come back since '04, it's not "TV" fishing.

Big bait, big fish. And the big fish are there. Well over a measly 5 pounds!! Not particularly in this lake but others in the area of the states of Sonora and Sinaloa.
Friends have pulled 10 to 12 pound peacocks out of those lakes. This was several years ago, maybe the netters have gotten all of the really big ones by now.
Report from my primo is 4 months ago he flew down with a group, and when they were on the water they pulled in one Bass after another. Almost every cast. Most were between 2 and 4 pounds. The largest was over 10#.

| What is considered a big mule deer in Sonora? The buck pictured is a little bigger than average, from my back yard in Fort Rock, Oregon. Many deer from that area will field dress (entrails removed) over 100 kilos (220 lb.). I once harvested one in Oregon that locker dressed (ready to cut and wrap) over 100 kilos. My neighbor harvested one that had a 44" spread on it's antlers. That ain't no fish story either... Attachment: buck in snow.jpg (Downloaded 233 times)

| For the lakes, worms always work great - Powerworms, Senkos, etc.. Big works fine. I use brown, but some swear by black and purple. I like to throw shad raps a lot and an occasional spinner-blade. Don't fret about the gillnets. They suck but it seems a sufficient amount of fish avoid them. Buena suerte.

Go with twelve pound unless you want to lose a few. It gets brushy. 6# works but anything less gets very expensive and frustrating. I never figured out the tilapia, though I caught a few 2-3# fish (maybe flies?).
There is not much current but there can be wind. Get some large split shot. I like the carolina rig.

| WOW! Them guys pack some bone around on their heads! I've seen a few muleys with horns that large in the last 50 years, but they sure weren't average to me. We lived in Tamaulipas, and I thought the deer there were pretty shrimpy. One of my fishing buddies has been talking about coming to Sonora for big bucks, and I agreed with him thinking they'd just be runts also. That's a nice buck. Good luck to you.

| I agree with you about not taking him until the last couple days. The right brow tine looks a little short or broken maybe. Last edited on Sun Jan 20th, 2008 06:53 pm by bahiatrader

| I can attest that there is more than one. There was a deer of similar stature in the back of a pickup in front of froggies a couple winters ago 32+ spread, mass, tall - it had everything

the rumors are true
there are allot of bass around in the reservoir
in three hours we caught 3 pushing 5lbs and 3 smaller (18-21 inch length)
we had no guide, a little disorginized and the bass were not in spawn mode yet so I would say that was pretty good
If you a call ahead to the guide service and go at the right time of year I am sure that you well
It is a solid 2 1/2 drive from San Carlos
The turn off is not marked - it is just after the river and the $59peso toll
when you get to the dam you can turn right - there is a guide service $250 per day w/ guide and gas - call a day ahead
or
You can tun to the left and there is a Bass Club were you can rent a row boat w/ a 10hp for $25 per 1/2 day - it is a gated community - so you have to park at the gate and walk in to find someone to open the gate
you need to know a little spanish
Like most things of the beaten path in MEX you may need patience while they find the guy - then the gas etc...

| Is the lake still very low? When I was last there, the water was over 1/4 mile from the bottom of the dam.

it appears to be near full to me
hence there where 12' tall trees with green leaves submerged to nearly the top of the trees
there was a roaring river pouring out of the spill gates
the foliage was up to the banks of the reservoir without big mudflats or beach's that you would see when a reservoir would be unnaturally low
