Isn't it tough enough to even get them on a popper or casting iron? I'm sure that I could try all year and be lucky to get one. If they are up and boiling in scattered locations then forget it. The only chance would be when they are in a V-formation on the surface chasing a school of baitfish that isn't quickly diving down. I just got my rod back, have some flies tied, and I didn't just get the rod for steelhead and salmon. I'm a lefty, so I'll take the other side. I'm still going to have my casting rod next to me though. If you're that insane and are willing to give me the throttle, then I'll put you on them. It would probably be a first down here.

Can't you just take the fly line off and jig for them? Wouldn't that count?

If you want a real thrill then fish for YT from a 200hp panga with a hand line like the locals. Its a gas jetting from one boil to another.

Me, me, me.  I want to go.  But, it isn't in the near future.  I may head your way next year.

Here is my idea..  Consider a downrigger rigged on a utility type rod.. Use how ever much mono it takes to reach the   YT's.. Imagaine 100-300 feet of leader.. Flyline is too thick..

If we troll perhaps a diver would work..

I am thinking about tying a fly that looks like a cedar plug..

How heavy are the jigs? Maybe if we use mono such as above idea we could use what the others use..

All ideas welcome..

One time when I was fishing off the Oregon coast for salmon back in the 60s we got into a terrific coho bite.  I couldn't get them to take any flies I had on an 11 ft. fly rod I built on a Fenwick blank especially for salmon and steelhead.  I put a sardine on and flipped it out with the fly rod and got immediate results.  I couldn't get it more than 30 or 40 ft. from the boat, but that was enough.

We were over the bar at 7:00 AM and one shy of our limit by 8:00.  We stayed out until 2:30 in the afternoon taking turns on the fly rod because it was so much fun until my buddy hooked a 36 lb. king salmon.  It was almost 4:00 when we finally landed it and came in with a full limit.  All three of us had line burns on our hands, but we sure had a heck of a good time.  I've often thought about trying that on The Sea of Cortez, but I haven't yet...

I've also caught fish in the ocean by trolling flies behind the wake at five to seven mph. in a zig-zag pattern.

Hi fishinmagishin,

I'm coming down either the last week of Jan or the first on Feb.

Send me an email and see if we can hookup, bringing 10-12wts

What flies work for you? I caught some YT with long blue/white decs.

Later!

End of January or 1st of February may be great...

I use 10's & 12's also.. I have little experience on going deep on the YT's.. We caught a lot of them across the Cortez by Isla la Guardia.. We were justtrolling deceivers or clousers.. They were kinda small 5-8#'s..

The action is on the surface of course.. But if not on top, we need to get down to them.. If 'No Sniveling', Steve C- & Jon-Jen tells us which iron or jigs they use, we can rig them up with mono since flyline will create too much drag..

I will send a PM and we can e-mail direct..

Peter,

1. Jigs are (l-r): Salas 7X light surface, Tady 45 surface, IronMan 5 Hvy, IronMan 5 Hvy, Kicker 15 Hvy, and a Tsunami 6" swim bait.

2. The jigs we fish deep with weigh 4 to 8 ounces.

3. The light surface jigs are only suitable for shallow fish, and they still weigh 2 to 6 ounces.

4. They get bit best when jigging at high speed - I use 5:1 and 6:1 ratio reels that move 30"-40" of line per crank, and I crank as fast as I can. The jigs are moving 6'-12' per second to trigger bites.

5. How do you plan to use anything like that with a fly reel?

6. Why would you use a fly rod with anything but a fly?

7. If you do decide to try, be sure to post the time and place so we can be there to shoot video..........

If I can't hook 'em on flies, I use a fly rod with small lures or bait sometimes just because it's fun.  A flyrod is generally much more limber and gives you more feel without allowing you to jerk a hook out.  Fighting a fish with a fly rod is much more manual, i.e. you provide the drag and pull with your fingertips and hands while looking out for a pile of line that might end up at your feet if you don't have time to crank line back on.  I don't know that I'd try jigging at any depth with a fly rod though, especially with a big heavy jig.

Kind of like handicapping yourself with a muzzle-loader or a bow and arrow when everyone else is using high-power rifles.  It's just plain fun to land a nice fish with a fly rod.
