Hi, we are coming to San Carlos for the first time this year, mid Jan to end of Feb and wonder if it would worth our while to haul down our canoe.  I see lots of kayak stuff but does any canoe?  Also wondering if with a wetsuit, snorkeling would be possible at that time of year.  Any other helpful hints such as hiking trails and/or biking trails, good shopping etc. would be greatly appreciated.  Cheers

Canoes are not generally seen in San Carlos...too easy to take on water as opposed to self bailing kayaks or "ocean kayaks" with a very tiny opening. Not sure where you are staying but my son rents kayaks and would make you a usage deal for longer term use if you don't have a kayak. Our business in on the beach at the Pilar/Delfin condos. Check out the website: http://www.SCAAMexico.com and we have excellent kayaking right out front of the condos (with the dolphins) and more importantly, in the estuary where all the winter migratory birds are roosting.

Yes, if you have a 3-4 mm wetsuit, you could easily snorkel, and we have two islands about 1/2 to 1 mile out from Pilar where there are some reefs and opportunity for snorkeling. Water in winter is cold, however, in the range of 63-68 degrees.

I noticed you asked about biking trails.  I am a fishing nut so I used my mountain bike to get to the marina.  While driving around, we found a neat place north of SC past the airport that would be great for a MTB.  It is called Canon del Macapule- a dirt road that winds up into the hills.  Starts out flat and easy and slowly becomes somewhat more steep with up and downs through an arroyo.  You will find novel plants and critters.  Ask a local for directions to Macapule- it is right on the edge of town.  Bring your MTB, it is great transportaion.

I used a fishing kayak for the month of October and agree that a SOT kayak is more appropriate then a Canoe.  You are in the ocean.
