My family and I are coming to San Carlos Wednesday for the first time and was wondering if you could give me some info:
I'm a flyfisherman....can most of the fishing be done wading? Do I need a boat? Float tube? License? What is the catch limit? Patterns? Best possible locations? Fish size?
Thanks very much!!!

Since time is short, so will my answer be:
can most of the fishing be done wading? Yes
Do I need a boat? No
Float Tube? Might be enjoyable
License? No unless on a boat
Catch Limit-see our fishing page on the main web site
Pattern? Don't understand the question vis a vis fly fishing
Best Possible Locations? inquire locally based on conditions
Fish Size-depends on species targeted
Hope that helps

Hi Kirk
I don't know of any succesful fly fishing from shore. There is an estuary just east of the Condos Pilar (East end of San Carlos Bay) and dolphins feed there every morning. You can wade out quite a far way at the inlet to the estuary. I have thrown a number of different flys there, but really don't know what I'm doing to begin with, and haven't caught anything. If you could figure out what the dolphins are eating, you might be able to catch their bait, or there might be other fish feeding on the same thing.
Your other chance for luck would be sight casting at skipjack boils, and possibly yellowtail boils. You would need a boat for that, and could find a smaller boat to hire in the Marina. I haven't heard of anyone doing it, and have thought of trying myself. I am a poor fly fisherman so I usually keep to conventional rod & reel when the fish are there. The skipjack would probably hit most bright colors of poppers.
Good luck, and please post any success that you may have! Matt

Hi Matt,
I am a cold water fly guy but living here now full time. I have an 8wgt and some fly tying stuff. Perhaps we could get together some time, try something from shore? I intend to get a 12 or 14 wgt this year and try some boat stuff. let me know if you are interested.

I wondered if anyone has had success flyfishing in San Carlos. I am coming down for a few days at the end of Feb and will be trying from the beach.
Any advice?
Thanks

I have fly fished alot in the sea of cortez in the past.
I have caught fish on the beach past the new marina in front of the hotel "forgot the name" and in front of the old Club Med. Both places early in the morning and in the summer.
On the beach I caught lady fish that were chasing bait. I used deceivers and clousers in blue and white, and chartruce.
In front of Club Med, this is when it was still a Club Med, there used to be a lagoon and the water would flow out at low tide. I fished from the shore were the water went out. I think it should still be there. There many assorted fish there, they loved the same flys.
I think summer is better but give it a try. Look for the signs, birds and bait. Maybe try the rocks in front of Club Med towards Deer Island. Salt water fish are very aggressive, you just have to find them.
I hope this helps,
Bueno Suerte
