Well I have to say SC is a beautiful place! My fiancé, myself and 2 English bulldogs drove down Wednesday and headed home Sunday. What a great time we had!

My goal was to catch a yellowtail from the Kayak but that did not come to pass. Hit San Antonio point Thursday but too late in the morning. Still had a good time and caught a few smaller fish. Friday morning we launched from the small beach in the Caracole area and headed for the main point there to try our luck. Couldn't believe how much bait there was everywhere. Tried trolling Rapalas and fished the iron some too. Had one big hit on the rapala but did not get hooked up. Caught a bunch of smaller fish, couldn't tell you what they were. Decided to head back in when the clouds moved in and wind got up.

Ended up sticking a hook in my finger when putting my gear away in the truck. Spent an hour trying to get it out. Decided a trip to the clinic was the best option. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at the facility and it was only 80 bucks!

Took some time to head to the marina and meet Jon from Jon Jen and Steve from Catch 22. Both were great guys and I appreciated them both taking the time to BS a little. On both their advice the next morning we headed to Marina Real to try for some corvina. Got there well before daylight and were the first along with two others. The plan was to launch the kayaks and fish from them but the wind would have made it difficult for us to unload and reload them so we fished from the pier. About 10 other people showed up also. Unfortunately we all ended up getting booted out well before the sun came up.

Headed to a nearby beach and fished from shore. Caught a bunch of calico bass, scorpion fish?, and some unknowns which made for a great morning. Had so much fun there we came back in the afternoon and caught more.

I have to say this board was very helpful in at least having some idea as to where to go and what to do. I thank you all for that. Below are some pics from our trip.

Looks like you had a good time - next trip, maybe you'll get into the big fish. Here's a link to photo id's for most of the fish in Mexico:

Good luck next trip!

What lures were you using?  My best lures in October were a 3/4 oz Crocodile or a 1/2 oz Bonito Feather.

Your fish, from top to bottom, as I know them:

Clown Hawkfish (Chino mero). I've never caught one, but have seen them many times while snorkeling the reefs.

Sculpin, a type of scorpionfish. Supposedly good to eat, but in my opinion, some things are just too damned ugly to eat. This is one of them!

Not a Calico bass, but a Leopard Grouper (Sardinero or Cabrilla) This a small model; they get much bigger. Compare to my pic of same below.

Another Clown Hawkfish.

Tough call on the silver fish. I want to say it's a ladyfish, but don't think so. I can't see the mouth clearly enough.

Stuart,I am thinking it is a mullet - I am looking at the stripes and large eyes, but again, can't see the shape of the mouth and head. Definitely not a ladyfish. Was it snagged by any chance Andrew? They are plankton eaters and snagging is about the only way to get them on rod/reel. Craig

I appreciate the replies.

Toaswheat, I tried a number of lures. Trolled rapalas and spoons. I did try the crocodile in a number of sizes but not the bonito feathers (not sure what that is). Tried jigging also.  Most of our shore fish came from storm swim baits.

Thanks for the link No Sniveling. I did find the clown hawkfish but not the last one. I believe you may be correct on it being a mullet. You are right that I did snag it when jigging a small spoon. It was also very slimmy. Maybe I should have cut it up for bait. Pic attached.

Thanks for the identifications Stuart. Those leopards sure look like calico’s when they are that small, Fought like them too! Leopard grouper is even better as that makes them a first. I totally agree with you on some fish are too ugly to eat and that scorpion fish was not getting filleted! We actually didn’t keep any of our fish this time.

We definitely had a blast as you can tell from the grins. Not catching a yellowtail this trip just means I will have to get back down sooner! I am on a mission…

Andrew - it is a striped mullet - BEST live bait in the world for everything in San Carlos! You should have slow-trolled it off San Antonio for yellowtail! :D

If you get a kayak, I HAVE TO GET A KAYAK :X! You already catch more fish than anyone - if you just need a treble hook in your hand, I can do that for a lot less money . Besides, then we would have to call you PlasticMan!

Agreed. Very clear in the 2nd picture. Big ol' horse mullet. Love flylining these out by the island and watching the yellowtail come up and hammer them! They can take a beating. We caught three yellowtail on the same mullet one trip before he finally rolled over and played dead.

That figures!! I had what I needed and didn't know it! The one the GF caught would have been perfect size. Speaking of live bait am I correct that its not available to purchase in SC? I dropped a sabiki rig a few times trying to get something that I thought I could use but didn't spend a ton of time doing it. I have a bait tube I can tow behind the Kayak that will keep them alive and fresh for quite some time.

PQ, the kayak fishin is definately fun. I also have a boat (bass boat for the local lakes) but have had the Yak out more recently. I want to make a wake with a fish towing me!    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZyv3VHHbv8
