We have been to Cabo billfishing with no luck and after reading several forums, sounds like San Carlos is as good if not better. Can someone give me information as to what month (s) are best for billfish and also what area would we want to stay in if our primary reason for coming is to fish. And one more thing, any recommendations as to whom to charter with? Thanks so much for any help/advice you can give.

I'll start the reply and let my amigos chime in. Billfish season runs from late May until October/November depending on the weather and water temps. This year in October we had an awesome run on billfish, including the largest ever taken in SC waters (740+ pound black) but billfishing was generally good all summer. Frankly, this year, San Carlos kicked Cabo's butt in billfishing.
Area to stay in? SC is not that big so stay where your are comfy and within your budget. Also depends on how big the group is. Check our main web site at the home button at the upper right to see hotels, condos, apartments, rental homes, etc.
Charter recommendations include Bob Blairs San Carlos Fishing Charters and Steve Calverts new operation, Catch 22 Sportfishing Adventures. We don't have Steve's web site done yet but will be working on it after the holidays. See his press release on this forum

Charter fishing for marlin in Cabo is so overrated! Yes, I've been there a number of times and, yes, I've actually caught marlin there. However, I was less than impressed. If you think racing to beat 30 other charter boats to a fish boil or bird pile, then throwing a live mackerel into the fray, hoping to hook up a small striper, is exciting, then go for it. I suppose if you could afford a BIG money charter, you might get out on some decent marlin. But, what I just described is the typical marlin charter I've seen in several trips to Cabo. Personally, I had more fun chartering pangas and catching huge pompano, monster dogtooth snapper, and the biggest sierra I've ever seen in my life.
For consistent blue marlin action, I'll take San Carlos any day. For the past five years, we've caught and released at least one 300+ lb. blue marlin each trip. Also, the occasional striper, and we've almost run over some whale-size black marlin just laying on the surface sunning themselves. All on trolling lures, no bait. The sailfish action is also good and we usually manage at least a couple of sailfish catch and releases each trip.
My biggest dorado to date, 50 lbs., was caught in San Carlos. This year, the dorado were pretty much non-existent, but the size and number of the yellowfin tuna more than made up for the lack of dorado. The billfish were so thick this year you could almost walk across their backs from San Carlos to Torutga! (Okay, I exaggerated just a little there, but it truly was an outstanding year for billfish!)
It changes every year. I look forward to what the Fish Gods might swim our way this year in San Carlos. My best advice would be to read this board regularly, watch the fishing reports, then schedule a trip when you see the action is starting to heat up. May to June is usually can't miss, although I've found the tuna fishing is better in June to July. But it is hotter then.
This is a little blue caught and released this summer.

Here's a nice San Carlos blue marlin just before we leadered and released him. All lit up like a big blue Christmas Tree!

Thanks, Stuart! That's pretty encouraging for a visit to San Carlos. We went to Cabo the end of September, first of October. The weather was REALLY hot and humid and the fishing was pretty bad. Two days out on $500+ charters and each day only caught 1 fairly small fish. We love Mexico so it wasn't a total loss but just not what was expected. I'll keep an eye on this forum. Which charter do you go out with? There have been a couple recommended already. I think the goal will be billfish and definately catch and release.
Thanks again!

| Hi Jan- Catch-22 sport fishing is a bill fish Catch and release operator only, for the best weather, combined with fishing its May or October. last year in our Oct 2 day tournament,27 boats released 98 bill fish (numbers may not be exact but are very close) I do remember the average was very close to 2 bill fish per day per boat,1 week later we were at the Bisbee tournament in Cabo and there average was was 1/3 rd of a bill fish per boat per day, its a fact during our 7 month season we kick Cabos butt for bill fish..We have world class Bill fishing, and may be Mexicos best kepy seceret...tight lines Steve

You're welcome! I have my own boat, the Constancia, that I tow down to San Carlos for a few trips each year, so it's very rare that I charter anymore, unless we go to Mazatlan, Hawaii, or somewhere I just can't take the Constancia.
You can't go wrong with Steve's outfit - Catch 22 Sportfishing or with Bob Blair's outfit, as previously recommended.
