Good luck finding more fish than three miles down from the reef. Toatal circle hook, J, and lure curse today but ....  Three sails, one striper, one nice dorado, and three smalls. We must have had sixty+ lure hits (with multiple one to two second drop backs), missed three to four J-hook hook-ups (after pulling line ten to twenty seconds), and seven circle hook hook-ups (ten to twenty seconds hooked-up), though with another four lures pulled after twenty seconds, and twenty two-second lure pulls pulled off, all ten to twenty second bait hookups pulled. Will hopefully figure out the circle hook curse tomorrow. Trying some thicker guage, but the curse must go deeper. After all the bait was gone, we're just having packs of sails come in with a fish behind every lure hitting each one up to ten times ... with no hook-ups, and I was burning thumbs feeding them to them - Bring bait!!!!!!! The fish are definitely schooling!

And a big Bah Humbug to the guys keeping three to four pound dorado in close. The guys next to us at the gas station had thirty plus peanuts. Thanks for keeping fish that would have been twenty to thirty pounds next year. They joked how you would catch nothing at thirty miles out. Well maybe next year you could, or maybe even catch a real fish on your 50# gear in close. Wake-up - the limit is two (so you better start cleaning fast).

Ya that is a bummer keeping all those small ones. I would have loved to get a few shots of that, what a waste.

I have a hunch your burning thumb might be the root of your hook-up ratio.  I still have bruises about my head and shoulders from Tico mates beating me when they caught my thumb on the spool.  The only time my thumb touches the spool is when I suspect the strike was only a knock down.  I will use my thumb to feel pressure.

Always make sure the clicker is on and the drag in free.  You may see a little back lash now and again but let-em run.  With circle hooks the longer the run the better.  You want that bait to be in the stomach and the fish feeling full before throwing the drag to strike and reeling the bait out.  Remember setting j-hooks and circle hooks are so different that you probably should not mix them in the spread.  In the confusion of a multiple strike I can guarantee I would pull and circle and reel a J every time. :X

See you all this weekend for the Cantina Cup!

Definitely. The burnt thumb was from trying to feed them lures.

Hit green water in the same spot today. I think the glasslike conditions had an affect. Our angler lost two sails mid-battle - a circle and a bait j-hook pulled. I thought circle hooks were suppose to stay hooked! I've had so many pull mid-battle. Maybe my baits need a little more ju-ju.
