I am looking at buying a gps chart plotter. I will choose one based on which product uses the best electronic charts for the SOC. Does anyone have any advice on this?
Thanks.

You have to look at the different products out there, but remember the chip is the important part of the unit...each manufacture have different chips etc...I personally use Navaonics which are in the business of only chips not a yesteryear chart like some...I personally like to see where and what we are following...give me a call and I can go over some options etc...thanks jon of jonjencharters.com

Thank you for the responses. I have heard that some electronic charts are based on a US Navy survey done in the late 1800's and that they are not very accurate. Jon advises that the Navionics charts are more up to date. There are plenty of units available that are compatable with Navionics. I am not sure I want to go to the expense of the Platinum version that includes satallite overlay but that would be nice.
I have been tempted to go with the new Standard Horizon unit which combines VHF w. loud hailer and chart plotter but it uses C-maps NT. Does anyone have experience of C-maps NT?
Thanks

I think the accuracy of all the units will be the same. The charts that they use are from the 1870's and are not super accurate. They are off up to 1 mile or more. You can only use them as a reference.
It's not like the US where the charts are hyper-accurate. You will need to start adding all your own waypoints and tracks into the unit. The GPS itself will obviously be super accurate.
So, the choice is more one of ergonics and quality of the screen. Garmin is the very best to use. Standard Horizon tends to have great daylight visibility. They are easy to use also. Furno is old and clunky. Raymarine is pretty good and the screen resolution is very good.

That was what I was waiting to hear. Thanks, Jon. I agree that Garmin are the easiest to use. However if the output is 140years old then this does not help much. I will do research to confirm that Navionics charts are not 1870's.
Thanks Again Jon

Wow Wow Wow.
This: http://earthnc.com/
May take a few years for it to come up to speed, but I wonder which Cartography /GPS company will use it as a GPS overlay.
