I have tried to catch a black marlin with no luck yet. I have fished twice at SC lately and have a question for the experts there: If you just had to catch a black marlin, what lure, what color, what size would you use? Or would you use a lure or bait? If so, what bait, etc.
Thanks for any input..I seem snake bit on these.

Fishinnut- Black Marlin, what a cool fish...I have fished San Carlos waters for around 18 years, It was Not Until the Last 3-4 years I have Started Catching Black's On a Regular Basis. I average 5 or so a year and Maybe another 8 a year on our Charter boats. Our Bill fishery is really getting Mucho better here..... I released a Big Girl Last week around 400 Pounds, my Friend Tom White released 2 this weekend..Sept and Oct. are by far the best times...From what I have read and Learned about Black's is they prefer shallow water, 500-800 feet or so.. 1/2 of my Black's have come 5 miles or closer to shore straight out in front of Marina San Carlos-180 deg.. the other from the Reef at San Pedro..SO MY FIRST ADVICE WOULD BE FISH THE CORRECT AREA'S, I have an under water topo Map of the Area I can show you.. Last year I met some guys that fish Tropic Star Panama for Blacks, They went nuts when they saw the topography at 5 Miles..I have caught them on Trolling Bally-hoo and lures...I do Have One Lure however That is a real stand Out, Pakula Cockroach in the color lumo...It's a Small Lure but big black's love it, between me and My buddies I would bet we have 15-20 Blacks in the last 2 years, ( Rombo and Jarrod feel free to chime In) Stop in and see me when your here,I will show you the Map..Also I can lend you the "Lure" If You need It ( I have 5 of them)
hope this helps

I'm not very good at posting Pic's so I hope this works, This is by Far the biggest Black I have ever seen In San Carlos. It Was Caught 2 years ago on Miss Teton..I did the weight Formula and came up with 724 pounds, I heard they finally found a scale big enough and it was 740 pounds..Either way what a fish Last edited on Mon Oct 1st, 2007 09:14 pm by Catch-22

Thanks for the input. And the pix...really gives me the hots for one. I have fished more years than I want to remember but most has been in the atlantic..so far as I know there are no blacks there. Must be why I want to catch one eh? I have been pretty luck on blues, whites, sails and, in the sea of cortez, stripes. Maybe I just have not been lucky..At any rate, excellent points on the areas and times...and you can bet I am ordering a pakula cockroach asap. I actually have the sproket in lumo but will get the cockroach. Do you use a double hook rig or single? With ballyhoo, medium or horse? Plain, skipping or with some sort of color? Any sort of teasers? I plan to come back to sc later this month to try again...want to be sure I have everything you suggest.
Thanks,

Fishingnut- As they say elephants eat peanuts, I'm not a big lure or Bait guy..My biggest fish have come on smaller bait's/Lures ..I use Med. bally-hoo skirted with an Islander Sailure, or Moldcraft small chugger, those are around 4" long skirts...I only use single hook rigs on bait and Lure's, we use 9/0 circle hooks on bait...for Lures I hang a J hook as far back as I can , yet still be IGFA legal....In the past 3 years I have Messed around a lot with different teasers, I like the Mold Craft Daisy chain, My Secret weapon ( I will tell you after the Tournament) , and of course the Pakula Witch doctor, Love to bait and Switch...Good luck in San Carlos and may the fish God's bring you your Black
Game On
