I'm thinking about a trip over to Baja around the 3rd week of October.  Maybe hit Santa Rosalia, Conception, and possibly Loreto/Escondido.  Thinking about 4-5 days.  Anyone up for buddy boating.

Timing it for when the risk of hurricane and thunderstorms die down and before the North winds start to blow.  It will also be pretty good temperature wise.

Send me a private message if interested.

I might be very interested. I think we probably know some of the same people. I'm guessing your boat?

Sorry got excited and didn't see you were looking for a buddy boat. Unable to do so with mine...oh well...

Anyone doing this and want someone to share the boat ride and fuel please let me know

JZ,

We were just talking the same story. Very timely. We're ready, I just want to have my Yamahas serviced first. I'll make some calls today.

Can anyone recommend a mechanic that you can trust when where gone?

Thanks,

Chuck

JZ,

I cannot send you a Private Email, I can't even log in unless I use a reply from your email.

The personal email I have for you does not work. Mine is the same cneidhart@msn.com  Send me an email.

Here is what I was thinking.

Hi Joe,

I'm all for burning fuel again. When were you thinking of doing this?
Before you sent an email I was thinking of doing it during the Baja 1000. I have attached the schedule. It is during the second week of November. Is that to late in the Year for you?
I don't have anyone racing, but the course comes close to the sea in a few places. What do you think?

Chuck,

I had an absolute nightmare trying to get someone in SC to fix a problem I had with one of 225 Yamaha 4 strokes!

I paid several of the local outfits, purchased my own software program, only to have them increase my problems.

My boat partner finally found a guy in Guaymas that knew what they were doing, I'll see if I can get the name and number for you.

Good luck!

Hey that sounds great! Check it out and we'll keep in touch. It looks like the best place to watch the race is at Bahia de Los Angles.

We have hooked up with one of the teams that will already be there when we arrive.

Hey Chuck-
Working on getting a mate or 2 for the trip. Should get to SC from here in Durango by Sat 11/10. Hope there a still a few fish around....do you know if there'll be roosters over there by then?
Doug

Chuck...just checked my map..Bahia de LA is pretty far north...I'd be wanting to head to SR as base point, then probably south for fish...any place down there to see race?

The course goes through Loretta and 7 mile south of the Bay of Conception. Well that is last years course. This years course will be posted on 10/6. When I get it, I'll post a link.

I agree BOLA is a little north for a November run.  I'm going to play it with the weather. We'll go with you to SR and unless the weather is nasty, we're heading north to BOLA.

Watch the channel about 20 miles North of SR, just as you round the corner and turn towards the Northwest.  It is notoriously bad.  I left BOLA once with perfectly smooth water.  About 40 miles north of SR we hit the worst weather I've ever been in for a long distance run with 6-8' waves (some bigger sets) and a very short period.  It was 2 hours of miserable conditions.

I re-read Gerry Cunningham's guide book on passage making from SR to BOLA and he specifically comments on this area.  It is like 6,000 feet deep 1-2 miles off the coast.  Apparently, there is an underwater ridge running from Tortuga up through there that impacts the water conditions.

In November the wind can start blowing from the North and not stop for 3-5 days.  No way you would be able to leave BOLA under those conditions.  It likely won't start until the end of November, but you never can tell.

A better way to get to BOLA from SC is to first run North up to Kino, then skip across the mid-drift islands, and then turn North up to BOLA.  This route gives you better protection from the North winds.  You can run in the shadow of the islands a lot of the way.

If you do make the trip, pick your window carefully and don't screw around.  Make sure you read Cunningham's book covering BOLA.  There are 5 or 6 submerged rocks in the bay that could surprise you.

If you make it that far, you have to go a little further to the Northern tip of Angel de La Guardia to the anchorage of Puerto Refugio.  It is one of the most amazing anchorages you will ever see in your life.  On the Western entrance there is a huge rock (sail rock) going up 150' out of the water that is shaped like a sail boat's slope.

Chuck-
I would be more tempted to make it south to Loreto, weather allowing, but that would be alot of gas-burning too. We'll see what develops with the race course et al, and keep in touch.

There is a book MexWX by John Rains that is valuable for cruising Mexican waters.  Unfortunately it only has 4 pages on the Sea of Cortez but has some tips for winter storms -- "Elephantes" and the BOLA/Gonzaga area are mentioned specifically.  The rolling clouds above low spots on the Baja mountain terrain look like an elephants trunk and signal strong winds.  I think this book it is out of print.  The author also has a book "Mexico Boating Guide".  Might check around for a used one.
