Hello!

Maybe someone can answer a question for me. I will be coming to San Carlos around the fist of the year for a few months bringing with me my 26ft Seaswirl. The question is do I need a FCC license to operate my vhf radio? Thanks, Chuck

No

The rules are a bit confusing, but you are considered a voluntary vessel and do not need a license to operate a vhf radio.

See http://wireless.fcc.gov/marine/fctsht14.html for more infomation.

As I read the law and have had it explained to me, you dont need to have a VHF license if you are operating DOMESTICALLY, meaning in the US. But once you begin communicating with foreign base stations (like Marina San Carlos) or foreign vessels, you need a license. I believe the page that Bart refers to mentions this farther down in the definition of domestic operation and further down.

I have also heard that any Capitan del Puerto supposedly has a 5.00 license that gringos are supposed to have but I have never known anyone who had one.
