Hi I'll be at san Carlos around Dic 20th the last time Fished for dorado on the "Suerte", on June 29, ... 13 slammers were landed using ballyhoo troling and surface jigs, in like 2 hours I think Yellowtail will be the target this time around, how do we fish for yellow in San Carlos? I wanna be ready, any tips will be appreciated
I live in Southern California, we fish for yellows with jigs on the surface, with mint color jigs like tady 45, salas 6x jr. light, and at the bottom, sinker with live sardine, or squidding a heavy 4 oz jig salas 6x jr. (dropping it to the bottom and reeling it fast) last week we were still landing yellowtail on the surface at Catalina island, but the rain came and killed the action
and, How big are the yellows over SanCarlos?

Eddie,
I learned to catch yellowtail at the Coronados and further south when I worked long range boats - these are more like fishing the ones down south. The fish are usually deeper and less often on a surface bite. Jigging is about the same - mostly 6XJR and heavier, and frequently 150-250 feet down. Trolling big Rapalas and MirroLures on wire line is popular and a good way to locate fish. A dropper loop with a BIG 10-16" squid strip or live bait (hard to come by) works well, but you often need 20 ounce or larger sinkers to stay down in the current. The big Humboldt squid are easy to catch or buy from the pangueros. Get with Fernando at Catch 22 - he has all the good stuff!

THANKS FOR THE INFO, WE HAD A GREAT TIME AT SAN CARLOS, MY KIDS ARE HOOKED AND CAN'T WAIT TO COME BACK FOR MORE FISHING, WE ALL FALLED IN LOVE WITH SAN CARLOS, ALL THE PEOPLE WAS VERY NICE TO US.
WHILE FISHING, THE CAPTAIN'S SET UP WAS SLOW TROLLING RAPALAS ON WIRE WHILE I WAS TOSSING SURFACE JIGS TADY 45 IN MINT COLOR ON 30 # P-LINE BLUE, BECAUSE, OVERHERE AT CATALINA ISLAND CALIFORNIA , WHERE I FISH.....
THE HOMEGUARD YELLOWTAIL ARE VERY FENICKY EATERS, NOT HUNGRY SINCE THERE IS ALWAYS PLENTY OF FOOD AROUND, YOU HAVE TO TRICK THEM TO STRIKE, WITH A TADY 45 OR A SALAS 6 X JR. JIG, SOMEONE SAID THESE JIGS ARE ANOYING TO THE FISH
UNLIKE MIGRATING YELLOWTAIL, HUNGRY, TAKES ON ALMOST ANYTHING, AND SINCE THE YELLOWS WERE AT THE SURFACE THAT DAY, I WAS GLAD I BROUGHT THE SURFACE JIGS, SO IF YOUR PLANNING TO VISIT SAN CARLOS AND FISH, BRING WHAT WORKS IN YOUR AREA, AND COMBINED WITH THE LOCAL SET UPS WILL COVER MORE SITUATIONS, I NOTICED THAT SAN CARLOS FISHING CHANGES FROM DAY TO DAY. THE SLOW TROLLING RAPALAS SINK, YOU COULD TROLL A COUPLE OF SURFACE TADY'S TO COVER MORE WATER. WE ENDED UP WITH 6 SKIPJACS AND 4 YELLOWTAIL - PICTURES AT YELLOWTAIL OR SKUNK- contact catch 22 sportfishing, Steve and Fernado are very skilled anglers and know the fishing grounds very well, they got the stuff.
