I was in SC 2 weeks ago and like on the baja side I used a jointed green mac 5" rapala type lure. In SC I trolled in 160-180 feet of water and had a sierra on almost every drop of the lure. My first pass at 220 feet I found nothing, guess they were in closer that day.
2-3 foot swells some wind but not bad and about 5-7mph
Hope that helps

They'll hit small chrome jets on the surface, too, or slow-trolled live bait.
I prefer the blue chrome Yozuri Hydromags, but as mentioned above, green/gold Mack pattern Rapalas also do the job just fine.
You might want to consider a 12" to 18" wire leader on your lures if you value them. Sierra is "saw" in Spanish and they certainly are minature buzz saws when they hit your bait.
A few years back on a trip to Cabo, we chartered a panga. Spent the morning on the Pacific side making live mackerel for bait. The captain then took us in very close to shore and we trolled the surf line right where the waves started to roll. It was a little too close for comfort for my taste, but we slow-trolled those live macks and caught three monster size sierra in the 20 lb.+ range. I had no idea that they got that big!
Sierra is a great eating fish, especially for ceviche. However, you have to eat it the same day. It doesn't freeze well, even if vacuum packed. Gets mushy and loses its flavor.

| The Sierra bite has been great every morning by Deer Island. I troll at 1,000 RPM using two light poles with at least 20 feet of wire leader. I troll a black and white Zigaboo Backside Troller with red and white feathers. Every pass along the island gave us action including many multiple strikes.

Damn Mel I use about 12-18 inches of wire leader. You must own stock in the wire leader company of your choice...lol

| I can certainly vouch for Mel's advice. But to tell the (ah hem..) truth...it's Mel's super guide "Sonny" that can put you onto the fish. Mel just drives the boat..lol.. Mel generously took a couple of us fishing (one from Vernon BC and me from Surrey BC, Canada) and we just had a blast fishing these hard hitting Sierra. On the second day, I used an 8 weight fly rod with a variety of streamer patterns. Obviously color did not matter - any fly was the ticket. I only wish I had a wire leader after some dozen or so flys, but hey...100 feet of fly line and 150 yards of backing in 15 secconds is heart stopping action. We froze some dozen or so fillets and a couple of kilos of jumbo prawns and I drove back in 3 days. Thanks to the cold bloody weather all the way home, the seafood stayed frozen in the cooler and my friends and family enjoyed a great feed this evening. Thanks again Mel...We'll be back soon..Ivan

Donde esta Deer island?? We have caught many Sierras with a fly off the surface.. This season I will have 1000 grain sink flyline.. We think many surprises are in store for the new approach....
We will be in SC 12/26 and on the water 12/28.. Any flyfishers planning on being there at that time?? Let's hook up....
