This is no fish story, 79 deg water and Marlin everywere, Catch-22 saw 14 marlin, released 2 and lost 1, "Pez vela" had a sail and Marlin released, we heard at least 15 boats on the water with Marlin hook-ups and releases, also reported were black Marlin, Blue Marlin and sailfish, Margarita 4 released 3 stripes as well as Several other boats, the water is getting hotter and fishing is 14 miles out with reports of billfish caught at 3 miles out and 8 miles out. this is crazy and the bill fishing is getting better, Marlin for X-mas ?
Better get here soon its really good, a few Dorado today but nothing like yesterdays 48 pounder
Tight lines

I went out only for a couple of hours today and trolled San Antonio for some good size sierra, but I listened on the radio about many marlin sightings, a few released and lot of knock downs.
Still lots of action out there!! I hope we get to release a "December" Marlin!

OK, we'll stop talking about the fantastic Thanksgiving marlin...although the Margarita IV (and previous Margaritas) have never caught a billfish in November, nor have we ever released as many marlin (6) in a 3 day period in 28 years of fishing in San Carlos. And we won't talk about the large dorado nor the wide open sierra mackerel bite for nice fish up to 7 pounds...that like to cut even a 60 pound fluorocarbon leader.
What about roosterfish?? (no you didn't have too many glasses of wine...you read it correctly). My supreme angler son (Bryan) landed 6-7 of these juveniles from the beach at pilar in an hour or two of fishing. Sure, they were just babies, but I wonder what might happen if they hang around long enough to become big daddies. Global warming has at least a temporary plus side for some of us San Carlos anglers.
May your Christmas stocking be filled with Billfish Foundation release tags....

| Yes, they were chasing the bait around near shore, and he cast to them with a small diamond jig. The lure was actually a bit too large and I'm sure he would have caught a lot more with a smaller jig.

Roosterfish? They look like they'd make GREAT bait! Just like the bonefish I catch there...

This is NOT a fish (mammal) story! I was casting a Storm minnow to baitfish being chased by porpoise off of San Francisco beach this Saturday. I threw the lure between two groups of porpoise and there was a SAVAGE strike with a 10 foot diameter boil! The porpoise ripped 300 yards of 12# off the spinning reel while doing the full array of "Sea World" jumps before he finally threw the bait! I just stood there dumbfounded, trying to decide whether to grab the spool and pop the line, or just let him spool it - the whole thing lasted less than 10 seconds. I was glad he got away without a lure in his mouth, but it was the most fun I have EVER had fishing from the shore! I guess he didn't get the memo that porpoise are too smart to bite anything with a line attached! I just wish I could have caught it on film!!!!!

I'll bet Flipper is angry with you!
We've had boobies dive on our Rapalas while trolling in San Carlos and get hooked. Talk about a squawking, pecking, ticked off angry bird when you go to remove the hook! It's easiest just to grab them tightly around the neck and hold them while somebody else removes the treble hook with pliers. None have been worse for wear, other than some ruffled feathers, upon release.
We hooked a sea lion on 100 lb. spectra last year at the 51. Talk about a screaming reel! He broke the line and kept on heading East at full speed.
I hate hooking up unintended critters, but it happens. I always figure if my bait/lure is fooling the other critters, then it's certainly good enough to fool the fish.
