| Armand, on 34' CAT "Mr TATA" left the Marina at 12:30 Friday and was back by 4:30 having caught and released 6 Marlin. Sonny said they could have caught more but they were too tired and wanted to rest up for the tournament.

Good fishing this past weekend, especially for Oct. Outstanding for marlin. I didn't see a longline out where I have run across them in the past. Perhaps they didn't set them for this tournament, although Thurs I heard a few guys ran past some on the way towards Tortuga.
From the sound of it, this was a successful tournament. Good to hear that so many were released. We let an unusally large striper go. It appeared to be a well fed fish, as thick as I've ever seen. There's still hope.

Was a great report!
Just for the record, couple of errors.
I organised and led the trip for these guys, are customers of mine from San Diego, but I own no part of El Duque.
My name is spelt "SEAMUS"
The Dorado I shot was 40#, not 37#. When you have a "dick" as short as mine, you don't appreciate being under estimated.
This sport of Kayak fishing is a blast to watch, I was hoping one of them would catch a bill fish from the kayak, but only caught them from the boat.
If any of you are interested in getting into it, these guys are great fun and the store is a great operation. They install the kayaks with rod holders, compass, GPS, Bait Well, depth finder, you name it. Pretty bitching.
They're going to be coming down frequently with a kayak trailer, sure they can deliver to SC no problem.

PS- I sell these guys diving equipment, not kayaks, so not trying to push sales here, just think it's a bitching sport. Kind of reminds me of my own passion of free diving compared to Scuba. Kayak compared to twin diesels etc.
On the next trip I lead for them, I really need to provide them "live bait", any assistance I can get on getting bait would be appreciated.
Regards

I used to jump in the blue water with a live dorado on the line and take underwater photos as it was fighting. Got some pretty nice shots. Notice the use of "used to".
Years ago, when the tuna ran, it wasn't at all uncommon to have a tuna on the line and get a shot tug and then have the line go limp. We would either bring up nothing (lost lure) or 1/4 of a fish. Once I saw what took the tuna at the surface... a monster mako. I don't jump into the blue water down there any more - with or without a bleeding fish strugling on the line...

I have had multiple shark encounters, spearfishing round the globe, most just swim on by or at worst take you're fish.
There are places I won't spearfish anymore, Guadelupe Island, for example, but for the most part, don't think it is a genuine concern.
Far less risky than driving the highway to SC.
Unfortunately, I see fewer and fewer sharks in Mexican waters over the years.
Have been fished out, pretty much.
But did read an article a few months back of multiple White Sharks being tangled up in fishing nets, a little futher north in the Cortez.
So, I'm not suggesting that there's no risk what so ever.
Have you got any good pictures of Dorado on the line?

Every now and then a great white gets caught in the SoC, usually up by Kino and the Midriffs. My shots are pretty good but not spectacular by any means. The water isn't all that clear and fades to a greenish color rather than deep blue. Also, the camera I used wasn't the greatest.
I've seen some BIG sharks out in the SoC. Of course, as you suggested, the numbers have declined a lot. I heard the Japanese had a pass to come and sweep for sharks for a year of so and decimated the population. I had a friend that had pictures in his office, silhouettes looking up of a school of hammerheads, in Tortuga. I dove there many times and only once saw a hammerhead. Still, I've seen big hammerheads jumping - clearing the water - and the occasional mako. Also, around a dead whale I saw big sharks taking chunks. I used to jump in out in the blue water all the time. Now I use a bucket or spray myself with a hose. No sense in getting spooked voluntarily. I'm sure you're 100% right that the drive down is a lot more dangerous...

I was with Acwaman one day outside of La Paz, and we were free diving with a school of hammerheads...over 100 fish circling around. It was awesome visibility, and a great moment in my life.
I wish there were more opportunities like that. By the way, we had a Mako jump in front of our boat last weekend...approx 15ft off of our bow. I would have been nervous if I was in the water, and that's why I always swim with someone who is slower than I am. Adios. Matt

I stored this link from a long long time ago and it still works, about Tortuga and hammerheads. Also descibes a pretty grim dive trip back in the winter of '89, when a few people perished out on a converted trawler in the night in cold water. Many on that trip were Hughes employees from Tucson...
