I have a 21 ft Seaswirl with a 175 hp Johnson. I bought a 25hp Merc-tiller-pull start to use as a backup. I have been informed by local boat repair that it is not practical to try to mount this engine in that even though it has 20 inch shaft it is not long enough to mount it, lower it to the water and still steer it. with the tiller. Being a novice with outbds it would appear that the best action is to sell the kicker and forget a kicker engine. Does anyone have any experience in mting kickers---or suggestions? or I guess is anyone intersested in a 25hp Merc. engine?

| Steve at Catch-22 was interested in a kicker.. The issue may be the shaft length.. Kickers are an excellent feature.. Running all day & trolling with 175 OB is expensive.. Stick with the kicker for trolling and back-up, perhaps just a different application...

I'm sure you will get some good advice here. If you need more try asking on http://www.boatered.com. It's the most active boating site I've seen. Tons and tons of great info.

Sell the engine. It is way to big for your needs. With a kicker you will in displacement mode, not planing, so your max. speed with a kicker will be about 6 knts. ( square root of water line length x 1.34 ) You can achieve this with a 8-12 hp engine. I assume your 175 is a 25inch shaft length so buy a 8-12hp, 25inch kicker, w. manual start. preferable with remote controls not tiller, and a lowering bracket. Connect kicker to 175 with pivoting tie bar ( made by Teleflex) so you can stear with main wheel. Have lot's of info. on this subject so PM me if you have further questions. Regards, T.
Go to http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/yamahaT8Kicker.html for detailed info. on the ultimate kicker set up. Great article.
