My wife and I are moving to San Carlos in about three weeks.  We'll be there for a year, and I'm planning on bringing my fly-fishing gear with me.  Do any of you fly-fish in the San Carlos area?  Any tips, suggestions?  I have an 8-weight steelhead rod and a few saltwater flies, but I've never flyfished in the ocean before, so i'm totally clueless.  Are there any fly shops in Tucson, or nearby?

Thanks!

I too am very interested in finding out about some light weight fly fishing.  I plan on bringing down an 8 wt flyrod with a variety of lines, flies and chestwaders to try my luck off the beaches.  I've been snorkeling off in the Carribbean side and saw an abundance of fish is the shallows that would have been excellent catch & release fun.  Is this possible off the beaches of San Carlos in November?

Well-Well!! More long-riders invading San Carlos!! Hooray!! Elvia and I are not going to be the only ones.. I have fished with a fly on the Sea of Cortez for 10 years + -.. Started in Rocky Point using a float tube & fishing from shore.. The over-all results have been excellent...

We have fished the Sea of Cortez as far south as Las Barilles on the East Cape..

Now we have a nice boat at SC that we have fly-fished out of 4 times this season..

As time allows I will recommend some fly's that will get you started.. Go to E-Bay and look at Salwaterflies(?) or some variation of that name.. I have purchased many saltwater fly's from him..

One idea, since you have not been on saltwater, is charter with Catch-22, and tell them you want to flyfish. He took out a charter with excellent success..

Friday past we were out late 8 a:m and caught 2 schoolie Dorado..Saturday we trolled the coast north and picked up Sierra Mackerel.. Boring!

In closing, for now, a 8 wt. is OK on the schoolie Dorado (smaller species) when you do hook a 30-50 pound male, the 8wt will be under-gunned.. Consider a 10 wt.. Oh, and the reel needs 200(minimum) backing and a reasonable drag.. When you are trolling with a lot of line out and do get struck by a big Dorado, you will need all the line you can get...

This should wet your appetite....

As a fulltimer here in SC I would love to hook up with some fly fishermen.  I have an 8 wgt and some tying stuff.  Catch 22 sounds good!

Cuffnbilly,  don't plan on wearing the waders.  They will just restrict your movements if you get caugh up in waves.  The water temps are usually good for bare legged wading, I do however recomend wading/flats boots because in some spots of the SOC there are a lot of stingrays in the sandy botom areas.  My friend Adam took a stingray spine in his ankle a couple years back in Rocky Point- not fun.  I like using a fast action 8wt outfit in 9' or longer from shore with med to fast sinking line.  I like the Rio clear tip lines for this. Take a  box of lefty decievers, bendbacks, clauser minows and basically anything that looks like a bait fish in the 2 1/2"-4" long range.  buy or tie flie in the blue/silver or green/silver colors and if you tie your own Make sure you get saltwater hooks.  One place I have had lots of fun is just outside the san carlos marina.  Just as you get out of the gap turn left and look for waves pushing bait fish up against he rocks.  There are usually a ton of small snapper type fish in this area and when he tide and wind is right Sierra macs and skip jack Tuna?will be working the bait fish.

Lookin' good for the flyguys... Let's start a group for exchaning info..

My technical abilities are minimal, but I will start with assembling a group on my mailbox..

Please, all flyfishermen send me your e-mail address's..

If you have not yet checked Bloodydecks.com forums-saltwater flyfishing+Mainland & Baja forums...

We caught so many schoolie Dorado a few weeks ago, it was almost too much.. Is that possible??? I will include some pictures, perhaps tonight...

Steve @ Catch-22 had a successful charter with some fly people..

I forgot to mention this.  Take a good pair of pliers when fly fishing in-shore.  a lot of beasties you will catch have teeth like razors or are to ugly to touch.

o-show, thanks for the advice about the waders.  my wife and i will be spending a month (nov) and will have lots of time to split between the golf course and the water.  i will bring some of salmon salt water flies and my tying kit.  i part-time guide up in the queen charlotte islands in northern british columbia on the west coast and flyfishing salmon is a huge sport these days.  maybe we can all get together and chuck a few flies, drink a few cervasas and tell a few lies.

Sportsman's Warehouse in Tucson has a fairly decent selection of fly fishing paraphernalia. We got in an Okuma reel the other day, it's called a Helio. Can't remember if it is a 7/8 or 8/9, but it is sweet. Also, we have a Redington CD 7/8 that would be a great reel for some shore fishing down there. Anyway, come by if your in the area and check us out.

Fishinmagishin,

New to this board and this is just great that there will be a bunch of long rodders to exchange ideas. My compliments for bringing things together and I certainly want to be part of this and be on the list.  I will send my e-mail address to you shortly.

With respect to Fly Fishing, Count Me In!  And, I will be in SC for about a month, around  August  11th doing some offshore fishing here and there.  Also plan to bring a 10wt  and slow troll a live 8"-12" mullet "stinger hooked" for a ???  I would really like some advice/help on the leader set-up rigging as the last time that I tried this, I was hooked up once (lost it) and broke off another time. Man, this salt water  fishing is exiting and will increase your heart rate.

We also plan to be in SC for the winter months.

Fishhead/Alexander
