Common question and has been discussed a lot on this forum. The thread below provides most of the information you need:

| If you're fishing from a sailboat, you should consider spincast reels. Shimano makes a very good one in the Baitrunner, which you can load with 30# mono. You can find them in combos with a good 15-30# rod. Penn also makes a good spincast reel which also can be loaded with 30# mono. If you're looking for a very good bait/lure reel, look at the Avet reels, which are comparable in quality with Penn International. The Avet Lx6/3 is a very good two-speed reel with lever drag. It will run you around $300 but will last forever and can be loaded with up to 400 yds of 50# mono or more with Spectre line, but be careful with Spectre because it's small diameter and can take off a finger if you get it wrapped around it with a hookup. If you want to go big, I recommend the Avet Pro EXW50, which can be loaded with up to 80# mono. I have both Avets and Penns and prefer the Avets because they are lighter in weight. This reel will run you around $550 new, but again, it's a good investment. You should alos invest in a fold-up fighting chair, which West Marine sells for around $75. You want to get safety hookups for you reels. I have fished from sailboats and have seen good rigs go overboard. For the spincasts, any good lure, like Kastmasters or other silver/sardine colored lures worked well this last week for us in S.C. when we got into the Dorado. The Dorado were hitting dark feathers, but the big bulls were hitting purple/black and other dark Marlin lures. Caught some on Ballyhoo bait rigs also, but lures were working better. We did well about 12-14 mile out from S.C. on a 230 degree heading. Saw no sail or Marlin however. Will be interested in how the BillFish tourney guys did this weekend. Good luck and good fishing.
