E & i will be in SC 7/20..

The last time we have the boat out I could hardly get any power.. A few factors were the fuel was LOW and perhaps we were actually starving for fuel.. A few times earlyier in the day the alarm went off, I believe for hot temperature..

A few suggestions have been, get new plugs, new thermostat, carburetor lines.. Oh boy, I can hardly..

Or, take it too a recommended shop have a check up Thursday P:M?? Perhaps a shop that would take a reservation 7/20 P:M..

It is imperative we are on the water strong Friday a:m, I want to follow 'No Sniveling' to see how experts win tournaments!! Comment NS??? ha ha!!

Remember, we are now driving E's super comfortable car (with a NEW Modine radiator) and cannot move the boat without having Ed Rembert moving it for me.. I guess if Dennis has time we could launch, fuel and make a short run to shakedown for prior low power issue.. If it runs strong 'No problemo', if it lacks power, re-trailer and take to recommended service center..

Suggestions please!!!

FM -

Boy, how did I get to be an expert and tournament winner???? I have been fortunate to catch more than my fair share of fish in my 1st YEAR of fishing San Carlos, but I am still watching, listening, and learning each trip.

This weekend was no different: I had a problem with water in my fuel system, which led to a failure of the low-pressure fuel pump when I was there two weeks ago. I changed filters, and had to soak the pump in paint-thinner (local mechanics "trick"), but got No Sniveling running and headed out late, doing very well on small dorado at the reef. The boat ran fine for the 30 miles, and I parked it, returned to the US, and ordered a new low-pressure pump, high-pressure pump, and an additional Raycor water separator.

I returned Friday, spare parts in hand, but not wanting to work on the boat in 98 degree/98% temps, so I hooked up the water hose and fired it up Friday. It ran perfectly - for 20 minutes. More water - QUARTS of water. Changed the L-P pump, new fuel filter, drained off two gallons of fuel (until I saw no more water in the fuel), purged the fuel injection and it ran perfect again - let it run at the bodega for 30 minutes - no problem. LET"S go FISHING and take the other pump, just in case!

Arrived at the marina and was met by Joel, who has helped me with boat work since my first trip, and told him what I had been doing for 4 hours of sweating, ready to launch! In some of the wisest words to ever come from him - he basically said "Jou are Keeding??" The water is rough, you have had water in the fuel twice, and you are going out fishing??? I pondered the wisdom of his thoughts and said to my self, "Self, this is a stupid idea! You have never been towed back before, and now you are ready to head out with a known problem?".

The moral of the story is to fix boats FIRST, then go fishing. It will be especially tough during the days around the tournament to assume anyone will want to stop fishing to offer a tow. I have changed my schedule to allow time to drain ALL 55 gallons of fuel, install the additional fuel/water separator (and bring spare filters for both), install the other new pump, and re-plumb the fuel vent to insure that no water is getting in that way. When all of this is done, it will be a test run for several hours (no lines out!), check the filters, and be sure that she is ship-shape. THEN I'll go fishing.

As far as trying to get a service appointment, that is tough, especially at tournament time - I tried last year when I HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM! I guess I just fixed the symptoms, and not the cause, plus, I failed to do even basic follow-up to see if I was getting any water in the fuel filter. Lessons come hard when you're old like me, but given a choice between working on the boat on the trailer, or in 4 foot seas, this one is a no brainer.

Good luck, and we'll see you next week!

Hey Craig,

Being an aggie turned Engineering Contractor, I've been around equipment all my life, most good water separators are a service item.  They have glass bowl that is drainable.  This is recommended on a 50 hr. service.  I have noticed though if the separator is hard to get to......it will not get done as often....try to locate it easy to get to and service it weekly.....should clean up your problem.  As gas prices soared I went to buying my gas at a local low price place and after few weeks noticed everything I owned running bad.  Quickly quit buying from him and went back to the "brand name" place and things started running much better.  Not saying he was watering his fuel.........but.........anyways,      Good Luck...tight lines.

Just a suggestion. I have a clear pint jar that i have the attendant fill before he puts the nozzle in my boat. That way i can see what the fuel looks like. Can save a lot of trouble.

Thanks for the support Ken! No Sniveling is going after the "Behemoths of Baja" tomorrow. May the best boat (or fishermen) win!

Happy birthday was celebrated for Gilligan this evening - he is snoring next to the computer while Cap'n Craig prepares ballyhoo for the battle tomorrow.

 Craig (and Gilligan in spirit)
