Catch-22 was on the water Saturday with Myself , Fernando and a few friends, our goal was to get a couple of our buddies billfish that had never caught one before, things could not of gone better!, 2 sails released and 4 Dorado boated, we had around 9 shots at Billfish and we were feeling a little " Rubber Hooked", bill fish were jumping every were, our first sail of the day was spotted on top the flat water around 300 yards away ,it was classic spot and stalk and everyone on the boat got to see it come to the bait.  Wow thats fun!

Fernando Got some very good shots with his Video Camera of a sail that went Crazy right at the boat, we also some very good still photos , Come on Fernando lets see those Pics and the video , the billfish bite is on for sure, we heard lots of other boats also reporting hookups on billfish

tight lines

It was a great day with lots of billfish around us...we hooked 4 and were able to keep 2 on the line and released. It's great to see the face of a friend getting his first billfish...he could have not stop smiling even if I'd put a gun to his face!! after a few minutes he was still shaking with excitment

We usually never take a fish out of the water for a picture, but this time we did since it was the first sail for my buddie, we had a successfull release after that

I'll post a video in the next couple of days

saludos

Yes.  Keep posting those pics and videos for those of us who are landlocked :)  What was the lure/bait that did the trick?

both sails were hooked on mullet, the one we lost was on a ballyhoo skirted with an Ilander, and we only got one hit on a lure, a moldcraft

it's so much fun catching billfish on bait, the drop back is probably the most exciting part for me, on the first sail I had to feed the fish like 4 times, he kept taking and leting go of the bait really fast, it was until the 4th attempt that he gave me enough time to set the hook

Rombo- fernando was mad at me because I did not get the quad drop back On Video, true story 4 times , this sail was really hot, remember the marlin that followed our bait for like 2 miles Last year, he was way hotter than that

That Marlin was incredible last year.  How long did the sail follow before committing?

Rombo- The sail was only in our spread for about 30 seconds, but he slashed at all nine Baits/lures in the water, he was going nuts. God I love that !!

Steve, Not sure when I'll be back to San Carlos, but I will come see you for bait, etc. when I get there!!!!!  Until then, I'll just have to drool over the reports, photos and video.  Thanks to you and others on this forum, at least I'm much more knowledgeable about how to do things more successfully.  Maybe the next trip will end the virginity my boat has regarding billfish :P

Gotta love the drop-back! That's the way we like to do it, too. We use ballyhoo, dorado belly (just slice some of the belly flesh from ones we've already got in the fishbox) or use some skipjack belly strips (if the skippies are around).

We keep one pole set up as a bait rig and ready to go for this purpose. Just feed the fish and set the hook! Works great for dorado, too, when you find a nice paddy that's holding fish. Make a wide circle and skip the bait right across the surface. The neat thing about this is that you can jerk the bait away from the peanuts and wait until a decent size fish comes for it.

We'll also sometimes put a small, thin piece of belly strip onto the hooks of our trolling lures. Adds that real scent and the fish will strike it without hesitation. Doesn't hurt to have that little something extra under the skirt!

;)

Gotta love those sailfish, though! They can be super aggressive. We've had them shoot through the spread and take three of the four small lures we had out, spit one lure out, and still have a double hook-up on the same fish! Have also had them charge the boat, too, after hitting a lure and not getting hooked-up. Sail fully extended and full color, racing in a straight line right at the boat. Heck of a sight!

Keep up the catchin' and the wonderful pictures!
