Hi all!

I have looked and don't see any info about the tournament, except $100/boat, and the dates. Is this the "calcutta", and how does that work? How much, and what are the jackpots? Anything you can tell me is more than I know!

Craig, will try to fill in some holes for you on this tournament, what I am going to tell you is from last years rules, but do no think there have been any major changes.  This is an angler tournament, the registration fee is $100.00 per person.  They will have a jackpot each day and the entry last year was $50.00 per person, per day.  The winner of the jackpot will be the person that weighs in the heaviest  legal catch for that day.  For a marlin to qualify it must weight over 200#, a sailfish to qualify must weigh over 70#, dorado, yellowfin tuna, and wahoo must weigh over 15# to qualify.  If you have more questions I will try to get you the answers.

Hi Dick,

So this is not the tournament with the "calcutta" bidding, right? It sounds like the rest is pretty straight forward, but only weighed fish count? What about released fish?

Thanks!

Only weighed fish count for the daily jackpots.  There are other prizes, not money, for points on released billfish.  The released marlin is 200 points and released sail is 70 points.  The tournament with the calcutta is the Labor Day tournament.

The International Billfish Tournament is a great way to get involved in big game tournament fishing at a relatively low cost.  As Dick said, this in an individual angler tournament with a $100 entry fee per angler.  There are no calcuttas, big money jackpots or other costs, except the daily big fish jackpot, which is optional and Dick covered that.  For your fee, you get a great cocktail party at registration on Thursday evening and awards dinner on Sunday night.

Prizes are ironwood trophies and several places are awarded in numerous categories. There are open, ladies and junior angler divisions as well.  See the Reports page on the main web site for the results from last year. We've fished this event for several years and always enjoyed ourselves.  In 2001, we were lucky enough to take the high overall boat award against some very stiff competition.
This will be the 59th year for this event and the Ernesto Zaragoza Foundation does a first class job on this event.  So sharpen those hooks and change that line and get ready-we'll see you in July.

Ok, I forgot a couple of questions:

Registration is Thursday, 7/20

Fishing is Friday, Saturday, and Sunday?

How do they score the released fish; pictures and the "hold three fingers up"?

No problem with only two anglers in a boat?

I'm sure I'll think of more!

Registration is 5-9 on the 20th at Marina San Carlos.  Fishing is Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and the awards diner is on Sunday night  This is an angler tournament and you can have as many on your boat as you would like.  This is an honor system and they do not use cameras or observers, just call in you hook and and release and it will be recorded.  Keep firing Craig and we will try to answer your questions.

There has been an change to this years tournament, it will now have a Team Jackpot Category:  Entry fee: $100.00 US Dollars per boat.  The team or boat that scores most points during the three days of the tournament, will win.  The prizes will be spread, 50% 1st, 30% 2nd, and 20% 3rd.  Less 20% for Charity.  This is in addition to the individual daily jackpots.

My son and I will be down next week for the tournament.  Just curious but how many of you are planning to participate?  Steve and Bob, are all of your boats booked?
Do we have any boats looking for anglers or anglers looking for boats?

See you next week.

We will be in SC 7/20-23, as of this message we will NOT be entered.. Does everyone on the boat need to be entered?

My boat is a 19' center console-150hp.. If a entrant has no boat, I may use mine for them..

Will there be an opportunity to meet the many posters on this forum??? No Sniv-,Bart, Vince, et al?? Happy Hour?? Festivities at the marina??

The program and rules are on the web site at

http://www.sancarlosmexico.com/59th%20IBFT%20Program%20&%20Rules.doc

The Thursday evening reception is a good place to meet folks as is the Marina Cantina on any fishing day.

Tournament Control radio is on VHF 63.

I believe Registration will be out in front of the Marina San Carlos office.  The reception in years past has been at the Marina Terra Swimming pool area.
