I have tried three sets of top-of-the-line Aftco Roller Clips, and all of them seem to hang up and refuse to release. Has anyone had similar experiences, or does anyone successfully use them, and HOW? I have had fish almost bend my riggers on several occasions when the clip did not release, even though they had been set at the lowest tension settings. Whazzup??

I think the trick with these is to insure they are properly mounted in the rigger. I have mine set up so that when open, the hinged part will release downward, not upward.
If yours swing upward, retie them so they swing down.
Also make sure there is no twist in the rigger line at the clip-it is sometimes easy to flip these over when inserting the trolled line and that will foul them just about every time.

Hi Bart,
All of that has been addressed - they are just REALLY hard to pull open, even on the lowest settings. I have Aftco Roller Flat Line clips and they seem to work fine, but they have a short line and no stretch to take up. It just seems like the rigger clips should open more easily - I broke one trying to bend the tension clip to reduce the pressure on it. I am wondering if anyone has filed the engagement sear or done a "trigger job" on them before?

Craig,
Maybe they're just defective? I've got a set of the same clips and have never had a problem with them. They seemed a little tight when new, but I oiled them and played with them a bit and they snap open fine every time, no fouling or hangups.

The thing is, I bought all three sets on ebay, and I am wondering if they are rejects - that's why I wanted to know if other people had had experiences like mine. Got a great deal at about $20 a set, but I think I am going to try sending them to Aftco if I can't get them to perform correctly.
Thanks!

We've used the same roller clips you describe for over 13 years (same set) and the only thing we do is spray them with WD 40 from time to time to keep them from "sticking" and for easier adjustment. Think you have received some rejects as you mentioned or they need to be oiled, sprayed, etc. as the other individual mentioned.
