Saturday June 10th.
We left Marina Real at 8:45 AM and headed out on a 160 degree heading. By 9:15 we were 6-7 miles out and put out 3 poles. Within 3 minutes we had a double hookup. By 10:15 we had 11 Dorado in the box. By 11:15 we had 28. They were not big, 12-18 pounds. We then realized we forgot the ice so I called Anne on the cell phone and told her to grab 4 bags of ice out of the freezer and bring them to the dock. We were at the dock by 11:45 picked up the ice and headed back out in search of the Dorado. We immediately had a triple hook up landing all three. We contiued to fish till 1:30 then headed back to the Marina. We stopped in the bay while Sonny filleted the fish. Total count, 42 Dorado. Wow, what a day!!!!!
What did we do with the fish you ask??
Don't know how many of you are aware, but Larry from JC's Cafe is feeding 50 orphans lunch and dinner every day for the next 5 weeks. The monies he is receiving does not come close to covering his costs. The reason I mention this is because the fillets from all 42 Dorado's were given to Larry so the kids could have a fresh fish dinner.
Congratulations Larry for what you are doing for the MEXICAN orphans.

While this a very nice gesture on Larry's part to feed the kids, I'm not totally convinced that it justifies taking 42 dorado unless you had 21 anglers on board.

There are a lot of hungry mouths to feed.
The end justifies the means as far as I am concerned.
Let the kids enjoy a good meal.
How about every angler donating fillets from two dorado for the kids?
Bart: If I had a dollar for every angler who catches and keeps more than 2 dorados
I would be roaming the Sea of Cortez with a 48 footer and 20 more anglers.

Mel, your justification for breaking the law is patently false on its face.
You did not know in advance that the fish would bite in those numbers.
You did not know in advance where those fish were.
You spent enough on gas to feed those children anyway.
The decision to break the limit law had to be made when and only when you reached the legal limit. That decision was justified on the spot because you could for your own pleasure catch many fish. Then you justified it by the donation to JC’s.
The logic of that does not hold water.
The cheerleading squad cannot believe that the end justifies the means when more was spent to obtain those fish than it would cost to feed those kids.
Your act was despicable.

Mel, you additionally had to deliver half spoiled, mushy fish to Jc’s. Forty-two fish and four bags of ice for 5 hours and more will cause enzyme spoilage. I will explain that if you do not understand. They must have been really small to even contain them in your fish box. I conclude that the fish handling by virtue of the sheer volume was inadequate at best.
Next you broke another regulation by filleting the fish in the harbor.
You admit in another post that you that you do not have a boat permit nor know what it is. Do you even have a fishing license?
Mel, make another post stating that this whole thing is a fabrication (tell the truth). You simply cannot be that stupid as having done this deed while sober and conscious. Tell me that it is a joke.

Mel - I stand by my original post -- BUT -- you sure are catching heck on this...
Tough call in my mind -- not as black and white as others see it. My biggest stumbling block (with the posts that invoke the law) is the fact that it’s hard for me to imagine our wonderful gulf being overfished by a fleet of anglers “giving their entire catch to charities.” Seems to me... it’s the least worthy application of the “limit laws” of fishing.
Now it’s probably true that I am not as wise as the “judges” that have handed down their rulings on your day of fishing... and I truly do not live a life so orderly that I am ALWAYS compliant (100%) with every law as the “police respondents” would point out... You see, I’ve always looked at a laws “intent” -- and in each application, the “justice” of it’s use.
It seems to me that... If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our man-made-laws, great is our sin.
So I’m back to my original puzzle... Would the fishing stocks of the Gulf be harmed by private individuals breaking the limit-laws STRICTLY to feed the needy?

There was no "showing off" I was merely stating the facts and trying to get others interested in helping the orphans and the soup kitchen.
Did I mention there were 5 boats involved and 20 fisherman. Right now we are running a full investigation, with the help of the Federalis, to determine who caught the extra fishes, so we can turn them in for not obeying the Federal Laws of Mexico.

Miguel, It was not an act of charity. He spent more on gas than he gained in food.
It was a way to justify his blatent over fishing.
If we would have taken the gas money and bought food I would have praised him but the meger result for the charity is they got some half spoiled fish. It truely has nothing to do with the charity.

Mel,
I agree with Dave's comments. Your decision to kill 42 dorado makes no absolutely no sense. I am well aware of the needs at the Embalme orphanage as my wife and I take them food and other items on a regular basis. Your approach stinks and not just of rotten fish! Joe

Sorry JZ but the deed has been done and the orphans are happy because for the first time in a long time they are going to have a fish dinner. Stop at JC's between 6 and 7. Go take a look and see how happy they are and you will see why I did what I did.
I know it was wrong as I am fully aware of the fishing laws and limits, but once in awhile stepping over the line to help the needy is called for.

I have one last comment on this subject. While I totally disagree with the taking of these fish, the situation does point out the glaring needs at the orphanages. Believe it or not the children do not get fish that ofen which is incredible considering we live on the Sea of Cortez.
At the recent Women's Rescate Tournament a collection box for donated fish was placed at the weigh-in station. ALL but one dorado were donated by the wonderful ladies. The freezer box was loaned by Alex at Froggy's. Matt and his wife Meryna (sp?) from H20 along with my wife helped to coordinate the effort. This is a positive example of what can be accomplished. Matt is working to set up a drop-off station where legal limits of fish can be donated on an ongoing basis.
Some of the fish we catch and keep probably end up freezer burned and are never used. What a great opportunity for the fishing community to help the children on an ongoing basis! Joe
