Here's a couple of questions that I'm asked when I take my friends fishing in San Carlos: 1) Why are the billfish jumping, sometimes 3 or 4 giant leaps in a row. 2) Are they mostly sailfish or marlin.
I've told them it may have something to do with parasites but I am not sure.

The bill fish you see jumping are Sailfish and Marlin, You can tell the differnce between the two by the way they Jump. Marlin come completely out of the water and Jump The same way Dolphin due, Sail fish splash on there side and there Jumps are more parallel to the water right on top of it (hope this makes sense) I have heard many reasons for them Jumping, but have always thought parasites makes the most sense, I'm not sure anyone knows for sure!!!

Thanks Steve. Thanks Bartmanaz - It's wonderful to have this forum with knowledgeable and friendly participants.
By the way, over on the diving forum they discuss jumping rays and there is a link to an article that describes the hows and whys of several species--in case any fisherman besides me is interested.

If so, I would have needed a super telephoto lens!!!!! Only one time has a billfish jumped near our boat and it was close....about 30 feet off the starboard side as we were putt-putting around on a glassy smooth ocean with no lures in the water.
On another note, several times while zipping back to harbor (about 30 knots on a smooth water day) we have almost run over billfish on the surface. Anyone ever hit one?????
