So, how did you guys do this weekend? Sounds like the dorado fishing was tougher than it has been in the last few weeks, based on the ladies tournament.

Also seems like wind plagued everywhere from the West Coast of the US south to the East Cape, including San Carlos. Has it abated?

Hook,

Just returned, and it WAS windy and rough for Saturday, and on Sunday morning. Yesterday was BEAUTIFUL!!!! Flat, with a ripple, blue sky and "bluer" water. The fishing was UNBELIEVABLE if you were in the right area - about 205-220 and 20-25 miles out. Whales, porpoise, and birds, with dorado flying out of the water chasing flying fish, and marlin eating dorado. No Sniveling released our first two marlin of the year and caught 25 dorado - most were 12-16 pounds, all in 4 hours of fishing. We left the fish to pull the boat, but we were happy campers! Today looked even calmer, and Buoyweather is showing 0-1ft seas day and night until Thursday. Wish I was still there!

Thanks for the report. Good to see that the decline was probably related to the wind.

Hook- we Had lots of Fun Monday with Dorado, we had 3 fly fisherman aboard Catch-22 and had a Blast Catching 15-25 lb Dorado, we Put 8 in the box and Released another 5 or so , all on 10 wt fly rods.wow what fun, It looks like the billfishing has finally picked up and we have a hot spot for the tournamnet, my Guess is it will take 5 billfish this year to win

Thanks to Steve w/Catch 22......we had the BEST time on Monday.  He has so much passion for catching fish that you can't help but have fun!  We were the "fly fisherman" (and woman) that were pulling in the dorado.  What a trip!  I managed to video the portion when we had dorados on both fly rods.  The video definately shows the excitement and level of fun we were having.  Hootin' and hollerin'!!!  Thanks so much to Steve, Ricardo and Shannon for such a good time.  We'll be back in July.......looking for that marlin hook-up and some more dorado fishing with fly rods!  Thank you , thank you, thank you!

The flyfisher people are making a impact at San Carlos..  Plus, hooking up (no pun intened) with Steve will helping the flyfishing community.. Steve will strive to make a pleasant experience for we long rodders...

Where do you live??  I am in Gilbert, AZ...

What tactics did you use to attract the fish?? Teasers?? Chum??  How far out??

I am too excited about your success to type more.. perhaps I will have calmed down by the time I see your reply...

Fishinmagician- as of tomorrow I will Live In San Carlos full time Ya-Hoo !! we are from Tucson and spend around 120 days a year In SC., now its full time !!

I spent a lot of time In Costa Rica and Learned fly fishing from the pro's down there, for bill fish we use bait and switch Method, Basically we troll 4 teasers and when a fish comes In we bring it to the back of the boat and replace it with a fly, the guys(And Gals) from this weekend made some Squid flys that worked perfect..

For Dorado we chum or live bait from a structure Or in the case of this weekend we used 1 Bally-hoo to hook up a fish , then all his Buddies would follow to the Back of the boat, we would leave the fish hooked On Bait in the water , and cast flys to his friends, Man that Squid fly worked well, i was very Impressed.. we had several doubles and I was having soo much fun I lost track of 3 hours that seamed like 15 minutes

I myself Do not fly fish But we Know How to do it , I would love to get some more fly fisherman down when the billfish bite turns on,(any day now) I think the tournamnet will give us an Idea of whats Going on?? Last year it took 6 billfish to win (2 days)  this year its slower , but I think its going to get good

hope this helps and send your fly fishin Buddies my way

Steve,

I am excited for the flyfishing interest...  You will do a good job for that bunch..

Here is a idea..  Our club, the Desert Fly Casters invites a guest speaker for each meeting..  perhaps, you and Cinda (our president) could schedule you for a meeting??  Also, if you have brochures, I will distribute them at the club meetings...

Another event we have done, is a bunch hire a boat for a club outing..   This is something that is possible quite soon... I will CC to some of the potential club memebers...

Do you have website???

Peter-

If the timing is good I would be happy to speak to your club, keep In mind I Qualify ,I My self do not fly fish, I would not consider My self an Expert On fly fishing, I can say however I have helped, mated , and Captained Lots of fly fishing trips and would consider my self very good ( even an Expert) at knowing  how to give a fly fisherman opportunities to Catch Dorado and Bill fish

Currently one of my booking agents is Doug Bucks castaway adventures, he has a fly fishing Charter booked with 6 guys planned for later this year with us, and specializes in fly fishing trips for his clients

My website Is http://www.catch22mexicosportfishing.com

Currently we do not mention fly fishing But with your interest and the interest of others , I plan to update my site soon, as a matter of fact i will sent this to Bart now and ask him to do so

Thanks

Steve

Thanks Chuck! It was a proud day for little No Sniveling! My friend Mark took the first fish on a new Tyrnos 30 2 speed with 60# on it and it was a good fight, and a good release. I was on a mission on the second fish - it bit a ballyhoo with a tiny Braid feather on my Tyrnos 20/50# on the Seeker 6455H - a really nice light combo. I fought it "stand-up" without a belt or harness, bringing it to the boat in 10 minutes and HOT! It did a great bunch of aerial gymnastics and was back at the rail in 5 minutes. Mark put the gloves on me, one at a time, and I handed him the rod while I leadered it. He took pictures while it protested my grip on its bill, and it left "post haste" when I let go. I just wanted to see if I could do it all, and it was a great thrill!

I am going to try to post some pictures - good luck to all my friends in the tournament this weekend!

We were out on Monday, May 29 and caught 14 dorado, released 6 and kept our limit of eight. 28 miles at 195. Biggest was 35lbs but we saw some over 50 chasing the 35. In a school we saw over a  hundred dorado and some really big boys.....but only when we were all hooked up.:X We released the smaller ones and only kept our legal limit,,,but we had a lot of fish for everyone. Sunday May 28 was a little rough for our little boat and Saturday we didn't go out at all.

We were only able to fish Monday due to the rough seas (for our 20 ft. center console).  We would have tried Sunday but before we could get out one of our buddies slipped at the dock and broke both wrists  :(.   Started out about 30 miles @ 180 and worked back towards the island.  Fishing was slow for us (4 strikes, 3 dorado boated) but we enjoyed watching the manta rays, porpoises and free jumping billfish.

What a great picture!!!! Our little boat is a 19.5' aluminum. Princecraft. My buddy is a Viking fan so I let hime name it "Viking" Some folks think it is a BIG boat but it is not. Wish I was down for the Rescate Tournament but had too many things going on in Tucson.
