Hi,
I just move from Hawaii to Arizona about three months ago. Next weekend I'll be heading down to SC for the first time to do some fishing. I really need a lot of advice. Anywhere from what to troll at what speeds in which directions to where to stay and what to eat, and what do I need to know about the trip down from Arizona. Any info would be nice. Also if there's any boat's that will be out fishing between May 27th and June 2nd would anyone mind if I followed around in my boat one day. I would like to learn a little about the area. I have a 23ft Wellcraft with a twin 150's. Thanks.

You need to spend an hour or two reading back posts on this board an also spend some time on the main web site-most of what you have asked has been discussed in detail already.
I live in Sierra Vista so call me if you have questions. Phone numbers are on the web site.
All the travel you stuff you want is on the travel page.

John,
No Sniveling is on the water from the 25th-29th - usually in a slip at J dock in Marina San Carlos. She's a 22'6" shallow draft cuddy (home made), and I am well versed in the "when to go/don't go" on the local waters after only one year - learned QUICKLY!
We all monitor VHF68 when fishing, so you want to listen there, but look for the names you see here when you're on the docks and ASK ANYTHING! You'll find you get lots of answers. Where are you coming from - staying at, etc?

| I'll be down during that time, too, and will be glad to help out anyway I can. We're going to stop in Nogales the night of the 26th, get up early, and cross the border onto San Carlos on the 27th.

Thanks for the replies.
Hey Stuart, would you mind if I met up with you in Nogales to convoy down on the 27th? It would be nice to follow someone who knew where to go. Thanks

No problem. We're coming down from Tempe. Over the past couple of years, we've found it's easier for us to break up the trip by going to Nogales and spending the night, then crossing the border early the next morning and hit the 21KM stop for visas early. We usually make San Carlos by early afternoon (1:30) and have time to check into the marina and get the boat in the water.
We usually stay at the Motel 6 that's just off I-19 and the road that's the international truck crossing. If you wanted to meet us there early Sat. morning, you're welcome to follow on down. Just look for the big white ProKat in the parking lot, kind of hard to miss. If you have a handheld VHF, we can talk as needed on the way down. If not, I've got a pair of FRS radios and we can use those.

Stuart,
Hey thanks, sounds like a great plan. Nogales is only an hour from my place so I could just come over in the morning. Do you have an email address that I can use if I have some questions? I will also pass my phone number in case you need to get a hold of me.

Good luck guys. Hey, Ahi Hunter, we talked a while back and I am a fellow spearo. Let me know if you see an opportunities on Dorado when your out. I haven't done in blue water hunting in San Carlos, only reef.
My wife just had a baby (Robert David Blair) last Thursday, so I'm out of the scene for a while. No worries, I'm super stoked to be a Dad!

Matt,
Hey congrats on the new addition. Sorry you didn't hear back from me, I was out of the area for a while for work. Let me know when your ready to get back in the water. By the way, any suggestions on where to do some reef spearingfishing? Thanks.

Hi John,
The best spot for reef fishing is San Pedro Island, and my favorite is the south tip. San Pedro is about 18 miles on a 270 heading from the Marina. It's pretty big so you will see it once you're out to see. There are yellowtail there in the winter months. I've seen some big, 15lb + snapper and cabrilla. If you go about 500 yds north of the south tip and about 25 to 40 yards offshore, the water is about 50 feet deep with a drop to 100 feet. The big snapper seem to hang around that drop off. Closer in to shore, the bottom is at about 30 feet with a bunch of big boulders, and gradually gets deeper too the drop off. There is also a sea mount about 75 yards offshore, south east of the south tip of San Pedro. It's about 30 feet to the tip, and there should be a bunch of reef fish there. Use a float there so boats can see you...sometimes they troll pretty close. I know there are wahoo and other blue water species that hang not too far off of the south tip, but I have seen any free diving. Good luck!

Matt,
Thanks for the info. That sounds exactly like what I was looking for. Even though the Mahi bite is hot right now, I'm still planning on jumping in the water every day. Let me know if you'd like to tag along one day. I'll be down there from May 27 - June 2nd.

Hey Craig calling NS (home made) is not allowed. It's either a "hand made custom" or a "custom fabricated" unit.

KJ,
I stand corrected and humbled. No Sniveling was a labor of love for a retired carpenter/contractor, and he spent 8 years constructing her. She is a 22'6" VeeGull, with a 12" sponson/rear deck extension, and very robust! I need to show respect when addressing her.
Muchas Gracias!
