Alot of visitors to, and residents of San Carlos may not realize it, but there is an active cycling community in Sonora. Below is not a 100% complete list of cycling races and events in the area, but covers most of those that would be of interest to those in and around San Carlos.

If you have questions on, or interest in any of these events, please feel free to post to the outdoor rec forum for more information. There are a number of events that have already passed us by this year and will be posted again next Fall as the new riding season arrives. Below are some of the remaining events of the 2008 riding season.

Glen,

If you ever want to do some triathlon training in San Carlos let me know.  I live in Nogales and will soon start building a little place down there.  Wife is from Obregon so I find myself down there usually in first week or so of October/December/March/June.  I drive down so I could take my bike.   I mainly ride road bikes but have been thinking about trying Exterra so I can bring a mountain bike as well.  Don't know if I am ready yet for the May 12 hr ride.

I have brought my road bike down, but personally can't trust riding on the road alone. Maybe in a mini-peloton?  :)    I do bring my road bike down for most the winter, but end up on my mtn bike most of the time.

The running down here is EXCELLENT! And there's more mtn biking than alot of people think. There's a little bit of a mtn bike community down as well. For Xterra training, I think its an excellent location to train... even standard Tri if you can get comfortable road riding in Mexico.

For a great place to have some open water swimming, not in a pool, yet not quite on your own in the middle of the ocean (also safe from Jellies in the Winter), the lagoon by the Paradiso (park at the Soggy Peso/Hang Out bar) offers a great super-size lap pool.

I'm down here a good 6-7 months a year it seems now. Always open to run and bike partners if you want to PM when in the area...
