It depends on the style of prep you like, IMO.
For empanizado (deep fried with light batter coating) we think La Cobacha along the road to Guaymas (hwy 15) is the best. 6-7 gigantic shrimp for 89 pesos, including side dishes. Other SC restaurants come close in quality but are generally AT LEAST 130 PESOS for the same thing. I think Fiesta, Blackie's and Charley's Rock are about 170 pesos now. That's pretty outrageous when you consider how prices on shrimp have collapsed this year.
La Cobacha also does a shrimp dish called camarones locura that is an oyster sauce reduction that is a bit like a slightly salty hoisun sauce from chinese restaurants. Very good.
Beyond those two preparations at Cobacha, I would consider Los Arbolitos the best restaurant in town for variety of shrimp dishes. Again, though, the prices will be at least 130 pesos I believe.
All of these, of course, have garlic shrimp.
We have found an incredible source for fresh shrimp for taking home for prep. It is the relatively new seafood (mariscos) market that is just before the McDonalds "Y". It is on the left as you enter Guaymas from SC. Blue and white building; spotless inside. We bought some of the blue grandes from them yesterday and they were, without a doubt, the best shrimp we have bought in this area. REALLY LARGE AND FRESH. They were mostly frozen. 120 pesos/kilo. We bought some there at the end of last shrimp season and they were 160 pesos, so the owner appears to be passing on the price reductions this year to the customer.
We have now bought shrimp from the vendors at the central mercado in Guaymas, the guys in Empalme near the train tracks, the stall next to the processing plant on the bay in Guaymas, Tony's Place, the guy next to Santa Rosa, Guasimas, the guys hawking them outside Soriana's, the tianguis in Empalme and the guy in the red pickup who cruises town. This mariscos place consistently has the best quality for the best price. Guasimas is second. At times, I really believe the shrimp at Guasimas hasnt even been frozen yet. That can be nice IF it is fresh,
I havent shopped Tony's yet this year for shrimp. Is he still getting 170-180/kilo for the grandes?
