6 weeks ago a gentleman driving an Arizona plated car used his credit card at a station in Hermosillo. He was told the first card was no good so he turned over another one.
This highly sophisticated operation has the ability to completely clone credit cards. The card is run through the reader and then burned onto another card. Within 2 hours more than $5000 usd worth of merchandise was purchased against both of his cards.
10 days ago another friend fell to the scam of "you did not give me a 500 peso note but only a 50 peso note" Again this happened in Hermosillo. She was tired, heading south and it was at night.
She said he was very smooth.....................................still gave her a sour taste in her mouth.
She would have rather spent the money here helping the local businesses.

Is this at a particular gas station in Hermosillo, or are there more involved?

I live in Hermosillo and would be interested to hear more details about the credit card scam. Do you know this person, personally and know this to be true first hand? To run up charges of $10,000 USD in two hours seems very unusual to me.
The $50/$500 peso thing doesn't surprise me at all.
I, too, would like to know EXACTLY which station did this.
As an aside, I noticed recently a particular gas station in Hermosillo with extremely long lines. About a block away, there was another station with almost no customers. It seemed odd to me. I asked a Mexican friend about it and he said that the government agency PROFECO had recently published a list of the most accurate gas stations in the city and that particular one was ranked as #1 in accuracy. Several times when I passed by, the cars were 8 to 10 deep at each pump. One line stretched out into the street for nearly a city block, obviously blocking traffic. That station is on Blvd Reforma, a couple of blocks south of the Periferico Norte (not very convenient for tourists passing through).
For what it's worth, I try to buy my gasoline at the same station every time. I also try to stay away from the ones on the main highway if I am not near my favorite station and need gas. I figure that buying where the locals buy is smarter that buying where the tourists buy! There are some good ( and I think honest ones) on Blvd Morelos. My favorite also takes American Express...

| I have bought gas in San Carlos and in Empalme buying about the same litres and did not notice any difference in my gauge or usage, since I drive to the same places everyday when I am in Mexico. This is not scientific but I know my driving habits.I did notice that being a gringo I get better service in Empalme. But I would advise people not to use cards. I always prefer cash. Same works in the U.S. There are scams everywhere. There have been card readers attached to ATMs here in the US, just have to do the best and protect your money!!!!

This person is a professional and I have known him for more than 15 years. I can put you in direct contact if you PM your phone number. It would good to report this to the right people but that is very hard to do in Mexico.
The station is the one just south of HMO outside of town called Guadalupana?
It has an OXXO next to it.
