Two days ago my husband had over $145,000 pesos stolen in Guaymas. It was a professional setup (according to police). We made some mistakes and he just didn't see this coming, partly because he was recovering from the flu and partly because he is very trusting (not anymore). He went into Bancomer Guaymas (near Ley) and withdrew a large amount of pesos. He was carrying a briefcase and our car has US plates. When he came out he got in the car to leave and as he was leaving the lot a guy pointed to the rear tire and signalled that it was flat. My husband pulled into a tire place around the corner to get it fixed. They fixed it and as he was standing there a guy engaged him in conversation (he did think that was odd). He thought he had locked the car and the briefcase was on the front seat. Our dog, Teddy, was in the car. When he got in the car, the briefcase containing $148,000 pesos, passport, FM3, cell phone, palm pilot etc was gone. He called the police and made a report, spent that afternoon and all of yesterday at the police station. You have to prove that you were robbed in order to make a report.
This happened because we agreed to make a cash payment for deposits on items for our new house, something we never normally do and won't do again. Bruce never should have gone to the bank alone. I have been sick with the flu so I didn't go. He should have seen the signs, the flat tire etc, but we are so trusting. We've been here in Mexico for seven years and nothing like this has ever happened to us. We feel stupid, we feel sad and well, we can't replace the money. I debated whether or not to write this because I haven't gotten used to criticism on the forums, but I felt that people should know. The detectives said this has happened before; it's professional; and they watch, do the crime and then head out of town quickly. They did say that if they can't get the money easily, they sometimes use knives and/or guns. We do feel lucky that Bruce is ok. We still love it here but it's going to take a while to get over this and it's definitely dampened our spirits and the way we go about our everyday business. Just wanted everyone to know. Please be careful when you go to the bank. Be watchful and notice things. Never go by yourself to make a large withdrawal.

This happened to another gentleman about 3 months ago. Same thing. SAME BANK! They must have spotters in the bank when a foreigner makes a large withdrawal. He was followed to San Carlos and the items were removed form his car when he went to get a hair cut. He made mistakes too. The only description. 2 men in a newer dark, Jetta type car. Sonora plates.
Very sad to hear this happened. Thank you for reporting it.
Obviously the lot guard is in on it and possible the tire shop.

| If it has happened more than once, why not hire some "muscle" to deal with the situation and set them up for a sting?

| A set-up would be great, photos and everything. BUT, you still would not be able to prove that they had done it before. I had a good friend that actually caught the three mexicans that ripped her off.(twice) and destroyed valuable items in her home..... We went in and did a statement at the ministerio publico, and two got off right away, and the third got a few months. SO, WHAT IS THE POINT< when the system here just doesn't work. (only took seven hours of our time, and two trips to Guaymas..... If a MExican rips off an American, well, you figure it out. They look at it as redistribution of the wealth. Sad state of affairs, but that is how it is. So, forwarned is forarmed. LOCK everything, trust no one.....some one wants water, that is the first clue....that is normally how it starts. They ask for water if someone happens to be home.. No one home, they do not need water....they rip you off.

If it is the same bank and the same parking lot and the same tire store....did anyone report it to the bank? The bank should definately be looked at and/or clerks in the bank? Sounds to me like this is an inside job.

| We reported it to the bank immediately. At the time we didn't know anything else had occurred. If you go in and accuse them they will just cut you off for any further discussion.

I think I would change my bank account to another bank if they are acting like that. I changed my bank account when funny things were happening to my online account.
I would think that a bank would only want to help if this has happened before to find the culprit. What are the police saying as there have been other incidents at this location??

Given they knew to flatten the tire while you were in the bank says you were set up before you went to the bank.
I'd be suspicious of whomever you promised to pay cash.
I am so very sorry you had to endure this -- I was ripped off in the past and one feels so violated, and that your trust has been shredded. I wish you all the best in the future. Thanks for sharing this so others may be aware.
