Could someone please advise where I can get up-to-date info on bringing furniture and household goods down to SC to furnish condo?  Have heard much conflicting info...just pay taxes on new purchases...then have been told that taxes have increased to 50%... take your chances (NOT OUR FIRST CHOICE)  new boader guards are really strict!!! on and on.  Where can I get information on how best to proceed?  Thanks in advance

We just brought a truck and trailer down full of appliances and furniture this past weekend.  We tried to just drive through nada de declarar and got a green light but got stopped anyway.

At the inspection station just past the 1st toll, there is a parking lot to the left.  Park there and go inside with a list of items with values.  If you bring appliances, list the serial numbers.  They will give you a $75 per person credit off your total value so the more people that you have traveling with you the better.  We had 5 total in 2 cars and they allowed a credit for each person.  Then, you go to the bancomer (at the same station) and pay.  They took our word on the values and didn't inspect.  When we hit the 21k, we got stopped again but after we handed them our stamped, paid receipt, they said have a nice day and waived us through.  The tax is 15%.  But again, they will only tax you on the value less the $75 deduction per person so gather up your friends for a trip down.

We reported a stainless steel fridge, stove, dishwasher, microwaive, 6 dressers, 2 couches, a washer & dryer and some other small odds and ends at $850.  They pretty much just take your word for it.

It was a very simple and hassle free process.   Save yourself the stress and just declare it.

Let me know if you have questions.

In case no one else mentions it, you can get a one time exemption for household stuff if you have an FM3.  Don't know the details but again search the 2 boards.

We tried the FM3 Maneje de Casa route but you have to go to the consulate, pay their fee and deal with that hassle.  The duty we paid was less hassle and less $ than what the consulate would have charged us.

Pretty easy to just follow the rules.  Be careful about being understating value of your goods.  The Mexican Aduana are good folks and you don't want to call them foolish by calling a new fridge $50.  You also don't want to leave your integrity at the border for the sake of a few dollars.

I've not had any problem with a list of items, reasonable values, printed in both english and spanish.  Pay a few dollars at the bank and have a good trip.

No hay problema

This is true, you do need to be careful not to under value items.  Choose values that are reasonable and you'll be fine.
