I bought the boat recently and it's a 14' wide by 34' Gemini Catamaran.  I have a custom trailer for the boat made and I have a truck to haul it.

Marina Seca says it's more expensive to transport it from Puerto Penasco than San Carlos because they have to send the truck from San Carlos.

Questions:

1. Can I drive the wide load the 100 ish miles to the US border from Puerto Penasco?  From there we have the wide load permits and escort vehicles scheduled.  The broker was unsure and San Carlos trucking advised against it (obviously).  The grey area is that I own the boat and trailer, it's not for commercial trucking.

2. Is there a marina that can haul out the 14', 8000lb catamaran- or a ramp I can submerge the trailer to get the boat on (it draws 18") in Puerto Penasco.

3.  Is there a local transport company in Puerto Penasco that can pull a ball hitch trailer with about 9,000 lbs load and 14' wide to the US border where I will take it from there?

4. How is the weather this time of year to sail from San Carlos to Puerto Penasco.  What are the suggested routes?

Thanks, this has been the best resource I've found for the San Carlos, Sea of Cortez area.

I had this information for the marina in Rocky Point.  It is old so I am not sure if it is still valid.  This project could get complicated and it would be a good investment of time to drive to RP and see the facilities firsthand.

Good luck

The one thing in your favor is pt 4.  The prevailing weather in the summer is southerly winds so getting north is not a problem although always check for incoming named storms before leaving.  Also in the midrift area and north, tides are a BIG!! deal so get a good tide table or get a copy of the tides program that you can run on your laptop.

Why not haul at the launch ramp in San Carlos and then truck it to the border from there? Marina Seca's trailers pick up boats at the ramp all the time to take them to dry storage at Marina Seca, so you could have them do it, and take it to the border for you? If that's too expensive, you can do it on your trailer? If you load on your trailer at Marina San Carlos launch ramp, just make sure to wash the trailer thoroughly when you come out of the water (brakes, bearings, etc) and then head to the border.

I am not sure about regulations in Mexico but 14 ft is not a problem in US as long as you have a pilot car and you are under 15 ft. In Mexico you could have a pilot front and back, in radio control with one another and the truck and trailer, and that may suffice? I think your worst problem in Mexico would be toppes, and maybe going through Hermosillo. You may also have to choose a wide border crossing, but I can't see where it would be a big problem. I am not sure what the advantage is to take it to Puerto Penasco?

Not sure of your eventual destination, but you won't have too many problems in Arizona, though California might be sticky, especially if they determine you need a CHP escort (expensive). If you have to do California, your shortest route will be to San Diego on HWY 8, and then launch it there and take it rest of the way by water.

Congratulations on your new boat and good luck with your delivery wherever you are headed

I was advised against hauling it myself.  After driving down from Nogales to San Carlos, I'm not looking froward to driving through Hermosillo either!  Lot's of traffic, and lot's of pretty sharp turns.  A 34' trailer 14' wide will take ALL of 2 lanes to make a turn at a city street corner.  I'm still trying to determine what the laws are for pulling a wide load in Mexico.

In the US, I can obtain wide load permits (normal load is up to 8'6") from each state and some states don't even require an escort vehicle if you are 14' or under.

I've asked San Carlos Trucking again if they can order the permits for me and I will truck the boat back myself, but they have not responded.

I understand San Carlos is the place to be for getting work done on the boat and storing it on the hard, but if I can get the put hauled out at Puerto Penasco I can avoid any major cities, and shave off about 200 miles at about $8/mile.

The ramps at Safe Marina may not be wide enough to accommodate your boat, but there is an area in the harbor where they pull out commercial/large vessels, when the monster tide is high.

The road from Rocky Point to the border is two lane, as is the road on the US side all the way up to Gila Bend, so you might have some issues with that to consider as well.  Lastly, you aren't going to get the facilities or experienced help in Rocky Point that you would in San Carlos.

Another question, where is your destination in the US?  If you are heading for the coast anyway, why not just sail it around?  This time of year it can actually be a pleasant trip as long as you don't get involved with named storms and watching the weather reports will deal with that.

Other Coast- Georgia.

That's a long way down to Panama and up the lesser antilles and past Cuba to bring the boat to Georgia.  Another time that would be a great trip, but we're expecting a baby in November and then there's that pesty work thing that I have to do once in a while.

We are thinking about just moving US versus moving the boat.  Any thoughts on Puerto Penasco as a home base?

Thanks

If you are thinking in terms of the boat, SC is probably the best place on the coast to use as a base.  3 marinas and 3 dry storage locations plus some marine supplies and easy access to the US.  Also many hardware stores and large markets nearby.  I have never been to Pt Penasco so can't comment on the town itself.

I liked San Carlos.  I asked about Puerto Penasco because we have lots of family in Tucson and I can get work there pretty easily.  The three hour drive back and forth is a lot more reasonable than the 6 hour drive to San Carlos.  I can leave the wife and kids on the boat and work a week and commute back to the boat if necessary.

Ideally, we would spend our working time in Puerto Penasco to be close to work and easily commuting back to the boat.  Then we can head south and explore the Sea of Cortez when the cruising kitty allows.

I can see hauling out and working on the boat in San Carlos, but I can't work there and I can't easily commute.  We have the custom made trailer for the boat, so it may live in San Carlos.

The nice thing about a boat- you can move it if you don't like your nieghbors!

The tide changes at pt. penasco / Rocky Pt. can be up to 18'. It is like the small end of a bathtub. Haven't been there for a while but I know the tides haven't changed. At the time I was there-many years ago- the port there was strickly for Shrimping Boats the only place to launch was Cholla Bay. They had this contraption called a girafe.A car engine on top of a raised platform with a drivers seat and steering wheel 8' to 10' above the ground on  4 wheels that would hook on to your trailer and take you deep enough to launch or retrieve. San Carlos is so much better for boating and other things the extra hours to travel are worth it.

Contact Safe Marine in Penasco. They can haul it out. Concrete ramps, plenty wide, powerful tractors. I fish in Penasco all the time. They haul some pretty big boats in and out of there. You can also store it there, but it's pricey. They have some end slips you might be able to tie up to. There are two huge boats in there right now. Roca Del Mar and Kaizen.

As far as hauling back to the US through Lukeville - you'll have to arrange with customs to take it through the side gate. My cat at 11 ft. wide (probably 12 with the trailer guide-ons) barely fits through the normal lanes, always use Lane 1 with a trailer.  Sonoita will be a little tight for that width, but you can make it.
