We have brought our dog to SC twice and RP once and on return have never been asked for her papers which we take with us. Our vet keeps our pets records and every time she gets a new vaccination we get an up to date document from him.
The only time we were asked about her was from the military checkpoint outside Hermosillo a few months back. The inspector thought she was cute and jokingly suggested we leave her behind.
U.S. has never asked for papers.

The US side asked us for shot records for our chihuahua (I think they were mainly looking for rabies cert.)
This was the very first time we were asked and mainly because they were harassing us, we came through very late about 10 minutes before the crossing closed in downtown Noglas and our rig barely squeezed through (we had to bend in mirrors and our side walls on the truck just missed scrapping through the lane.)

We were asked if we had the health certificate for our dog when we entered the US at Nogales on 5/18. I told him yes and he waived us on. Didn't want to see it. This was the first time we have been asked and the first time I actually had one. Usually I just have the record of his shots.

I wonder what happens if you don't have a health certificate?
I just went to the government's website http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/travelers_checklist.xml
And it just says that dogs are required to have a rabies certificate...
I just wish they would have the "rules" clearly written so we can follow the "rules"

The rules are simple. You are required to have a vacination passport for all of your animals, with their vacinations current. They are especailly interested in rabies, but do require the others. Sometimes they ask for it, sometimes they don't, but you are required to be current. The Mexicans usually do not ask, it is when you are returning to the states. If your animal looks sick, they can require quarentine, or an examination by a local vet out of Nogales.

| I agree with Leesa! The rules are not simple--some sites, including consulate sites say different things than other federal sites. I have always gotten the special health certificate--just to err on safe side--but it is expensive and I think it is a rip-off as it is no more than their annual exam anyway. And costs an extra $70 per dog! Do most people just risk it with just the rabies and other vaccination documentation?

We live in Mexico 6 months of the year and get our dog shots in San Carlos. We have a little doggie passport record of shots and that is what I usually take w/me. This year we went to the vet just before we left and she asked if we wanted the certificate so I got it. I don't think she charged us extra. I don't worry about getting into Mexico although I have the doggie passport and feel pretty confident that the US side would accept my proof of shots w/o the "health certificate" if they ever actually asked to see it. Like I said before, the guy asked us this time if we had it but did not want to actually look at it. First time we have been asked. That's my take.

Robin, It doesn't cost anything extra if you get your shots current in San Carlos. You don't need the records for coming into Mexico, you just need them for going back to the US.

| With over 40 years bringing dogs to Mexico and back. All I have ever used is their shot records. Haven't had any problems on either side of the border.

Has anyone ever been asked for a health certificate or proof of shots to bring animals into Mexico?

After living here for 28 years, I have never heard of anyone being asked when coming into Mexico. And yes, the vacination book(current) is all you need to get back into the states. I asked them the last time I crossed.

The first time ever being ask in Mexico was last year. I was ask if I had the papers for my dogs. I flashed the shot records and he did not want to see more and waved me through.

The odd thing... when we fly back and forth with my wife's Yorkie, we are asked for vet records coming into Mexico, not back into the USA.
Kinda the opposite of driving in.

Hi,
We came back from Mexico yesterday. Had our dog with us and tried to hand the border agent the rabies certificate with the passports. He took the passports was not interested in the rabies certificate. Didn't ask if we had a health certificate or if the dog had any other shots.

I think that is the experience most of us have most of the time. But they have the right and occasionally do ask for more. I am curious if anyone has ever had an agent demand a health certificate and refuse to take proof of rabies vaccination instead. It seems to be the consensus that when asked, the proof of shots is readily accepted in lieu of a formal "health certificate."
