Does anyone know if there is Verizon cell phone coverage in San Carlos? I called and they said to enter *228 just before you leave to get it to roam in Mexico, but could only confirm coverage in Guaymas and Hermosillo. 99 cents a minute - ouch!

| If you have a laptop with wireless, just set up a Skype account. You can then call from any of the many places in SC with wireless service. Skype is free to the US and so are the wireless services. For other parts of the world, it varies but Australia for example is 2.7cents/min if you call a normal phone. If the person you are calling is also on Skype, it is free anywhere in the world.

I had Verizona and wound up cancelling them because the coverage was so poor. Went with AT&T and could not be happier.

I went with Verizon because they had the best deal on a prepaid plan. They also had the best coverage where I go in the Arizona mountains. The last time I went to San Carlos I checked for a signal several times on the way down. Got a signal in the Nogales area, Hermosillo, and San Carlos. No signal in between. I didn't try actually calling. When I got it I told them to do whatever they did so It would work in Mexico. They did'nt say anything about having to dial those numbers.

Love Skype, use it at home. Have not had a home phone in years. Laptop safety in the hotel might be an issue... probably not any more so than in the states I suppose. Good idea. Thanks.

| Just about every anglo in the area has a laptop. The risk is certainly no more than it would be in the US and probably less. From time to time, houses are broken into but is usually a house left empty for the summer season. Laptops are not a rarity down here and while you shouldn't leave one lying around in the open, I wouldn't worry much about getting it stolen. I once dropped my wallet in Mexico, a man saw me do it and then ran half a block to give it back to me. Last edited on Thu Jun 4th, 2009 01:55 am by mesa

I use Verizon and get good service in San Carlos. Just update your roaming with *228 before you cross the border. I have a Blackberry and receive email and text no problem and the cost is minimal. If I have to make a long call I buy a Telcel prepaid phone card.

| I've had similar experiences. Had a backpack fall out of the truck in Durango and some kids followed me for a mile or two to give it back. I have also returned the favor. Once exchanged $300 for pesos at km 21 and the guy forgot to take the money. I drove a mile or so back and paid him.

Our Verizon phones work in town. It ain't so cheap though. A cheap local TelCel cell phone is a good option if you are down regularly.
Also, if your phone is ON and someone sends you a text, the texting fees are high and you will be billed for that text even if you don't open it. If the phone is OFF and the text comes in while in Mexico, then no additional fees.

AT&T works much better in MX than Verizon. The technology AT&T uses is much more common in most of the world.
Btw, if you have an AT&T wireless card it works great in SC now. Expensive...but works great and very high speed. Imagine riding in a car driving 70mph between SC and Hermosillo and surfing the net. Crazy huh?
