Hi..I just found this and would be very interested (along with 100's of others) as to what they are saying about the aquapod. It would be nice in an attendee could summarize the presentation.
thanks...dick

It was very interesting at SC Yacht Club on Wednesday night with the engineer from AquaFarms who is putting the Aquapod together. The sphere is in the process of being put together at this point - top half and bottom half. The owners(Mexican) were there also. Heavy polymer frame and wire mesh. There will be a total of 4 of these this summer. They will stay under water most of the time and they will be growing shrimp in them. One pod can take the place of two trawlers. The cost of each AquaPod is $120,000.00 USD and by the time they finish supplying, feeding, etc. the cost will be $200,000.00 USD The AquaPod is prediator proof and they will start with a net inside holding the larve and then dump the net once the larve reach a certain size. The shrimp are fed ground up and compressed (with vegtable oil base) shrimp heads - yes, shrimp heads. The net that was there last year did not prove to be prediator proof so they had problems with it however they are going to use it again later to grow Yellowtail. They can not acquire yellowtail fingerlings in this area so they will be sent to La Paz from I forgot where (Hawaii?) and go through quartatine there and then come to this side. Much more on this subject but I can't remember it all. The presentation by Vince Radice was also very, very good and he is making excellent progress.

Here is the website from the company that makes these type of Aquapods-net pens. Their Senior Structural Engineer and Project Manager Steve Ruell, P.E. - attended the presentation.

We drove by this thing yesterday and it is now sunk down so that just the top is showing. There are some floats around its perimeter. And it appears that an anchored trawler is what keeps it in place. There is one anchored a couple hundred yards off it.

| once you clear the harbor mouth, head generally in the direction of Isla Bellota, aka Haystack, the rock you see as you look at the point out towards Guaymas...you'll pass near it. not much to see though.

All that is left now is the incubus.
The mother ship has left and returned to the Proxima Centauri system.

What are your marketing plans?

The entire shrimp cycle is around 6 months in order to get them to our desired size, 50 grams, or what would be a U15 count shrimp. (That's under 15 shrimp per lb). So around early to mid November they should be ready.
Re our marketing plans, we have a commercial partner in SF. Check out the following site and p[roduct video of one of our other projects you might find it interesting.

Gustavo,
First, let me thank you for accepting Ocean Camp's invitation to attend our Science Night program. Your comments were articulate and informative. Our audience appreciated your presentation.
I remember that you invited our audience to watch a video that you named the "Fisherman's Daughter." I now have viewed it and I think that it is a remarkable story. Ocean Camp has worked with schools and universities in Sonora and the USA to promote understanding of the beauty and importance of the Sea of Cortés -- as well as all of the world's oceans.
We look forward to working with you soon, at any level, with community awareness programs that may be helpful to educate about needs for sustainable food production and related topics.
A pleasure to meet you,
Mark Morelli

Gustavo,
Miguel Angel Valdez

I certainly didnt mean to make fun of a legitimate business endeavor. But to encounter this thing floating on the surface with fog moving in and out was just a weird experience.
And in my ignorance, I decided to have fun with it and hopefully start a conversation about it. Mission accomplished!
These would have to be some of the cleanest shrimp around, compared to some of the other shrimp farms I have seen. Will the end result only be for export at amaebi prices?

| Dear hook, If anything I guess I should thank you. Your curiosity and initiative led us to finally acomplish what we neglected for an entire year, reaching out to the comunity and informing what had been going on in the San Carlos whereabouts. So much for our PR. Re your question, our product is, indeed, intended for export. Yet, we do have plans to have a delivery of product for local restaurants and hotels so that they can feature it fresh on their menu. Something like "fresh from our local seafarm" So, what do you think?

Would assume that the aqua pod is under water but noticed today that the "Net" was being used again. Are you useing it for shrimp also or are you already raising the yellowtail that you spoke about when you did your presentation. Understand that it is not preditor proof so wondering what you are raising in it.

You are right, the old cage is out in the surface. Not being used yet though. We have been keeping it out in the sunlight to dry off so the cleaning process can be as little agressive as it can. We'll also be doing some maintenance to it, zinc replacements, things like that.
We are expecting to receive some fish some time soon. And as you said it is not predator proof. Still, an important investment to have sitting around not being productive. Is just a matter of keeping an eye on it and making sure it stays clean in order to prevent drawing to much attention from sea lions.

Gustavo:
Thank you so much for the explanation concerning the "Net". Let us know, in the future, what might be raised in it. Also, when will the next Aqua Pod be put into position? This is all so interesting and we appreciate your interaction.

Kiwi,
Although some effort has been done to get almaco jack (seriola rivoliana) and yellowtail amberjack (seriola lalandi) to have our Sea Station stocked, there are many obstacles that keep puping up. Right now another oportunity appears in the horizon, the University of Baja California has a research program that has been doing Totoaba rearing cycles and now wants to move into grow-out research. They are considering sending 5,000 totoabas to be fully grown in our Sea Station as part of a collaboration agreement betwwen them and our company. We hope the negotiation succeedes.
The following Aquapods will be getting deployed during Mid to late august. This activity is diving intensive, thus, any diveres interested in something different will be hihgly appreciated.
Gustavo.
