I have no idea what it is. There were a couple of guys in wet suits in a panga going round and round it. They did look like scientist types, not fishermen.
Was hoping that posting this might get some info on what it is.

| There was a fish / shrimp type of farming thing there or in the same area last year but it was like a big triangle this one is much more modern saw it yesterday. Last year I was told that the Gov. was decommissioning shrimp boats and trying to promote farming ??????? I did a video underwater of a shrimp farm a few years back in las cocinas that had millions of shrimp till Marty came a week after the video and took it out.

Could it be a tuna pen? It would seem that only the prices of bluefin could justify this and they arent in these waters.

| Hook not sure but the shrimp farm I filmed started with the larva at about this time and I filmed it in Sept. just before Marty. I will do more to find out. I do understand that fish farming is very bad for the waters around them but but shrimp is not when I saw the shrimp farm it was clean and very heathy shrimp. Shrimp or fish????

There is a story in one of the recent Fortune Small Business...of a fish farm...located on the open seas around Panama (started life in Puerto Rico.....but ran into US regulatory issues). The young man constructs his pens in that same fashion......submerged spheres constructed like geodesic domes.
It's a good read if you can find it.

| Thanks Susan, but actually it was Matt Young who forwarded that link to us, so he should take the credit. We have since contacted the person involved in operating the "sphere" and we will share whatever else we learn about this endeavor.

Yes, This is precisely what i was talking about. This is the same Brian O'Hanlon that was featured in Fortune Small Buisiness.
Brian O'Hanlon has since moved his Deep Sea Aquapod operations for raising Cobia. Puerto Rico, being a US protectorate, put him under the jurisdiction of the Dept of Agriculture... Frustrated by their inflexibility, he relocated his operations to Panama.
Regardless, we still don't know who owns the pod in SC, nor what they are raising.

In that article posted by Susan it stated that a pod had been sold to Mexico. So looking forward to seeing the rest of the story. Looks beautiful.

There will be a discussion on the "AquaPod" at San Carlos Yacht Club, Wednesday evening 7:00PM. Open to the Public. Evidently the owner or manufacturer will be there if he can make the time.
