My husband and I are thinking of moving to San Carlos and I am thinking I wouldn't mind doing some part time work. Is this possible and are most of the positions service/retail type jobs? Thanks!

Minimum wage for this area is 53 pesos a day and you will need special permission from immigration to hold the position.
Unless you want to teach English at a local school and they will swing the immigration papers for you. The pay is a wee bit more.

This is a wonderful place to stay as busy as you like. With a variety of charitable organizations from animals to building a community center at a local school.
The best way to use some of your time would be to mentor a Mexican child. This is a great program. Look for the Mentoring youth link at the top of this forum.
Work? Yuck.

Susan C., I am interested in teaching English in SC--any idea who I would contact? I'm a certified English/ELL teacher in Sierra Vista, AZ, and visited SC last October--I absolutely loved the area!
Thank you!

| Perhaps Susan can give a better answer but I would suggest you talk to the people at the private schools like Colegio Americano. I think the public schools are much more rule oriented and have more hoops to jump (the teachers union is not supportive of hiring foreigners). I would also speak to the folks at ITSON (Techical Institute of Sonora). Don't expect much pay but if you are looking for something to occupy your time it could be very rewarding.

Please contact me via PM. I work at Colegio Americano and they are looking for English speaking faculty for the next school year starting about mid-August. I can gve you the name/email of the right person to contact.
And as Susan said, there is the mentoring program also. I can direct you to the right people on this program as well.

Thank you all so very much for the information. I am also interested in teacher exchange opportunities, and will follow up on the links you have provided.
Ballenagris asks that I contact you via PM--I don't know what PM means, could you advise?

Private Messaging. Go to the main forum screen and at the top, above the forum selections, is "Read Me First". It is complete instructions on how to use board functions.

Everything in perspective. When we're there for a few months, I really wonder how I ever find time for my job.? I hope to run out of time for it soon. Ron

¡Un cierto día, cuando la marea y la luna APENAS CORRECTAS!
I am not sure that translated correctly:
"Some day, when the tides and moon are JUST RIGHT!"

Do you really want to take a job from the many that need one? Are you that needy?

| Do we all 'defer' applying for jobs in order for more needy people to apply? Or is it just in Mexico that we should not apply? There are hundreds/millions of non-US citizens working in America. Are they taking jobs away from more needy people? I'd say people should apply for any job that interests them. The application process should flow accordingly. The best qualified applicant should/could get the job. Applications and hiring should not be based on need, but rather on skills, qualifications, experience and abilities. I'm sure not going to defer applying for any job just because there might be more needy people looking for the same job.
