San Carlos looks like a beautiful place. My wife and I are looking forward to visiting there.

I'm having some trouble locating flights to the area. Do most people drive from the states?

Most people do drive, partly due to the high cost of flights into the region.

As suggested, you can fly into Guaymas, but will probably find it much cheaper flying in to Hermossillo.

Guaymas airport is only 15 mins from SC, Hermossillo is closer to 90 mins.

Guaymas has a non stop from Phoenix, Hemossillo has one from Tuucson and I think Phoenix.

Cheaper alternative, is flying in to Tucson, rent a car from Enterprise that can be taken in to Mexico and you're looking at a 5-6 hour drive down and a 5-6 hour, plus border wait, drive back to Tucson.

Well worth the trip.

Good luck!

Try   http://www.aviacsa.com/english/index.cfm

They have flights into Hermosillo and a connecting bus to San Carlos

Usually the best rates are at the end of the month and on Thursdays.

You can also try  http://www.volaris.com.mx/

Great prices RT Hermosillo/Guadalajara  $394.00 US  They also have a shuttle bus from Guaymas to the Airport and vice versa for $20.00 US  one way.

Tufesa also has buses from Guaymas to Hermosillo airport too.

Do you know any links to cheap flights from either, into Hermossillo or Guaymas?

Thanks

It looks like driving from Tucson may be the most economical for us. I've never rented a car and driven into Mexico before. Are there any things I need to know before I do it? I've seen that you can get a compact car from Enterprise for about $100/week and the drive down takes about six hours.

LBlues, I live in the Phx area and made the drive for the first time last week.  It turned out to be a very easy drive with great scenery.  It does take about 6 hrs from Tucson.  Let me know if you would like me to email detailed driving instructions for your trip.

Lblues,

Enterprise will insist you get the Mexican insurance through them, but the rate is not much higher than if you were t get it yourself and it'll save you the hassle of doing do.

Don't let them slip in the full coverage for the US also, unless you need it, as is usually covered by your own carrier and their rates are unreasonable for that.

Again, you will have no choice with the Mexican coverage being done through them.

The toll road is a 4 lane divided highway the whole way down, quite good condition, just keep your eyes on it, as does offer a nice suicide berm should you steer off to one side.

First time, would suggest you do it during the day and most people will suggest you always keep your Mexican driving to day light hours and although I don't always abide by it, I do believe it is sound advice.

The full tank of gas you pick the car up with, will probably get you all the way down there. You can full up in SC, might want to read the thread on gas in Guaymas and follow some of the advice posted, to avoid any potential issues.

If you don't get a full tank, there's a gas station just shy of the 21K check point, on the east side of the road, which you'll find the price of gas a lot better than in the US.

I save $20 on a tank with my gas guzzler and fill up on the way down and back, to reduce the cost of the trip and end up with a full tank.

I've only once had an issue with the quality of the gas I got in MX, but as you'll have a rental, who cares!

You should get Visa's at the 21 K check point, but do not need to get a car permit unless you are going down past Guymas, believe Obregon is the cut off.

Have a great trip!

Thank you for the great advice! It sounds like it'll be pretty easy to navigate once we get across the border. I didn't know we would need visas. I'll have to look into that a bit more.

My wife and I are divers so we're pretty excited going to SC. I've seen that there are lots of posts about that.

Thanks again. If you're in SC when we get there, 9/7 (and we'll be there a week), I'll buy you guys a drink.

You will need to stop at K21 and get a visa.  A Seven day Visa is free.  Have a great trip.

A relaxing way to get down here is the Tufesa bus in either Phoenix or Tucson.  The seats are comfy, there are movies (in spanish) or you can enjoy a good book.  It can take a couple hour longer, but no driving stress and it is a bit cheaper.

Enjoy!
