We are getting ready to retire to Mexico but have concerns regarding our pre-existing conditions  and the fact our insurance won't cover us outside the US.

Are there any reasonable plans anyone knows about?  Thanks.

My wife and I have the same concerns.  IMSS apparently excludes preexisting conditions including cancer even if persons are cancer free and have been cancer free for more than a year.  Anyone with first-hand knowledge and experience have any comments?  Any comments and/or suggestions regarding private insurance policies?

The private insurance company we checked into would  not insure if you have high blood pressure( even controlled under medication) or any kind of pre-existing conditions.

It is my understanding that CIMA Hospital in Hermosillo has a policy that people here have found satisfactory.  Another suggestion is to check with Susan Canale at joseluisdoc@clinicasancarlos.com.  She is very knowledgeable about all kinds of coverages available, and her husband is a fine doctor who has practiced here for many years.

Thanks, Sophia, for your information.  We were about to send out emails ourselves, but seeing that lcoon668 is already doing that, lcoon668, would you mind posting the info unless it's personal?  If you'd rather not, that's okay;  I simply didn't want to send essentially the same requests for info to the same people unless it's necessary.  Incidentally, we've been patients of Dr. Canale, met Susan, recommend them very highly.  Don't know why I didn't think to contact Susan myself;  great suggestion, Sophia.

lcoons668, there's a discussion about medical/health insurance on the Chapala web board you might find interesting.  Go to chapala.com/webboard, click on ajijic/chapala/guadalajara, and go to the medicare topic.  Also, if you go to the CIMA Hermosillo web site and click on services (or servicios), I think there's a list of insurance providers CIMA accepts.

Keep in mind that you can get air-vac for around $140 US a year per person.  They will air vac you to any destination in the US and have many other advantages.  When I had occasion to use it, the plane took off 3 1/2 hrs. after being called - very efficient.

Many private US secondary insurances (to Medicare) are reimbursing for medical services in Mexico. You still need to pay the medical provider but submit the receipts directly to them. Aetna and BCBS are two.
Some people who have Medicare only are choosing to buy a medical air evacuation plans through http://www.skymed.com. The patient can be returned to the USA for further medical care.
ING medical insurance is available in Mexico. You would see the doctors and hospitals in their provider network. I believe that pre-exisiting ailments are covered after 2 years but please contact one of the local representatives for this company.

I hope this helps.

There is a very good article we wrote about this topic, on Mexico Connect. If you don't already have a free sign-on,  just sign up for free.

The article is here:

http://www.mexconnected.com/mex_/travel/thamrick/thamrick1207.html

Some BUPA international medical plans are flexible about some minor medical conditions, send us an email to:  tony@globalmedicalplans.com

CIMA accepts most of these international health insurance plans

The article above is worth a read...
