We have a lot in the De Anza development near the golf course and have friends who are moving in soon. We recently found out that phone service won't be installed for approximately 6 months. Any ideas on how we can communicate without phone lines, keeping in mind that we'd like Internet connection also, and calls to the states via cell phone are expensive.
Is there any way to get a cable TV line installed and communicate via the cable to the Internet and can this also work with Internet phone service? If so who in the San Carlos area can we talk to that may help us communicate with the world without phone lines.
Thanks,
Verano

If you can get cable out to your place you can then run Skype for phone service (http://www.skype.com).

Phone should be easy -- cheap cell phone with calling card might do. Lots of places in Guaymas sell them...
Internet is PROBABLY available through X-Pro (office next to MarinaTerra) -- their wireless service should cover your area, their rates are very good, and service can be bought for ANY length of time...
IF... you can get Mega Cable you'd be golden... last time I checked, it was only about $10 more a month to add internet on your basic TV package (note faster down/upload speeds will up the price)... and, as mentioned earlier... Skype is possible with a cable/TV/Internet connection...
Hope this helps...

Thank you to all for the information provided. I'll pass it on and let you know how it works out so that we can help anyone else who experiences the same "challenge".
We'll try Megacable first and see how long it will take to get cable service to the new house. If they can get a line connected in fairly short order then I think we're well on our way to having the problem solved.
If that doesn't work we'll move on to the wireless option.
Thanks again for the feedback and suggestions.

When you bought in DeAnza were you advised that you would not have phone service ? Seems very strange? I would not buy where there was no phone or computer or cable? Know this happened when the Country Club homes were first built, many years ago, but now?? it seems crazy.

| There are many areas in San Carlos that does not have TV cable service. And when you ask Mega Cable when they will have service in these areas, they just say, in the future, its up to the Guadalajara office.

| This is one of those "When I was a kid......" comments, but it hasn't been that long ago when there were only a few phones in all of San Carlos and we all communicated by CB radio!

Susura,
The De Anza development is new and is an extension of the road that goes through the Loma Bella development. When the lots were made available for sale it was understood that the roads and infrastructure were to be completed by early 2007. The purchase agreement on the land called for progress payments, with the final payment due upon completion of the infrastructure. To date everything isn't in yet so we have not been required to make the final payment. We knew that there would be delays as things take a little longer in Mexico. Quite honestly, the same is true for many developments in the States.
Our friends were quick to build on their lot in the De Anza development and their house look terrific so far. The only downside to their project seems to be the phone installation delay. That's one of the downsides to being the first to build in an area. I suspect the issue is more with the phone company than the developer. Getting a phone line installed in some European countries can take years. It can happen much quicker in the states. Mexico seems to be somewhere in between.
By the time we build our house I'm sure phone lines will be installed.

| Go to http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest and fill in the type of connection you have, and it will do a test and tell you the speed.

Here is what I have done:
1. Goto Telcel and get an Amigo pack pay as you go phone.
2. Get Internet service either via megacable or wireless.
3. Install Skype on computer and get a Phoenix Skype out number, or one from where you are from, if Skype has a portal there.
4. Configure Skype to forward to your Telcel number when your Skype is not on.
5. In calls to Telcel are free, so anyone can call your Skype out phone number and it will forward to your cell at no charge from Telcel.
6. People who call your Skype out number get charged the rate from their location to the location of your Skype out. So if you had say a Phoenix Skype out number, it would be a free local call from PHoenix, thru to your cell.

I have to agree that the Skype call-forwarding service works great!
One important point though:
you don't actually need to have internet in your home, nor do you have to have a landline phone in your home.
You just need a Skype account, which you can set up from an internet cafe, for example. When you get a skype account, you could 'buy' a phone number in the area code where you live in the US and your friends and family can dial that local US number to reach you. If you don't have a phone in your home here in Mexico, you could buy a Telcel cell phone and have your calls forwarded to that cell phone. On your skype account page, you can enter a phone number you want your calls forwarded to.
I have set up this service so that my friends and family from the US can just dial a local number and it rings here in Mexico on my home phone.
The call-forwarding service from Skype does cost you. For example, I think I pay about 10 cents a minute for calls forwarded to my home phone. It is about 33 cents a minute to have calls forwarded to a Mexico cell phone.

There may be one more option that has not been mentioned. If you can get Megacable and desire to have a Mexican phone number, Megacable now offers "Megafon" service. It's a VOIP service similar to Vonage or Packet 8, but you'll get a Mexican number.
I just returned to Mexico and re-upped with Megacable after being gone for several months. The new cable modem that I received has the phone capability built in (Motorola SBV 5121). That is, there are two phone jacks on the back and two LED's on the front (labeled TEL 1 and TEL 2). Although I don't have the service, and don't know the costs, it is available.
Hope this helps.

Bienvendidos a Mexico!
Remember, Toto, You are not in Kansas anymore.
My Boy has been waiting in the Ranchitos for 8 years for cable.
My place in Guaymas has it all! Well, not quite all, not many Gringos. Gracias a Dios.
