| When we came to SC last month, our vehicle permit and tolls cost less than $40. Here in in SC gas prices are about 2.25 to 2.30/gal.

Vehicle permit is free w/Sonora Only and tolls are around $10-11 total (3 stops).
You have to get a tourist visa. Multiple family members can be on the same visa when you get it at k21. Seems like it was free if staying less than 7 days, but I can't remember for sure. Anyway, it costs about $20. Can someone give the details on this.

Make sure you have your Mexican insurance in hand. A year ago Thanksgiving I was ran off the road while passing a truck 86 km north of Hermosillo. My SUV rolled 4 times going down the highway. The first thing the police wanted was my insurance or they said I was going to jail. I had Insurance! Instead I was sent to the beautiful Cima Hospital in Hermosillo. It was better than most Hospitals in the US.
I have been driving that road for 15 years to my house on the water in San Carlos and thought an accident could never happen to me! Being an airline Captain, safety is always top of my list. Yet, You just can not be too careful with the yearly addition of trucks on the Mexican Highways. The drivers do not have driving time limits which they follow. Twice I have watched trucks drive off the road in broad day light when the driver had fallen asleep. Well, one got me! And guess whose fault it was? The Gringo's! The reason the police gave was that the truck did not actually come in contact with my vehicle. The car went into a spin once the rear wheel caught the shoulderless pavement. My insurance company (Hambone, in SC) took care of everything, including the hospital stay. Even gave me top book dollar value for the Acura SUV.
My advice, get the insurance and drive slowly with caution. It is tempting to fly down the highway at 80 mph (which I wasn't). There is no room for error on the Mexican Highway with no shoulders. Just be very careful and enjoy the beautiful waters of San Carlos!
